The staff was overly nice. The view is great, the pool is appreciated after a hot day although it is very cold (not heated). Other hotels are sometimes in places very hard to reach - especially if you have your own car + free parking.
We liked the duplex situation of the room especially since we were traveling with kids. The breakfast had enough variety to offer but they don't peel their papayas. Plenty of different teas to choose from including black tea (apparently a rarity in Brazil).
The large window to the balcony (and street) is single pane, therefore noisy at carnival time (need double pane). Not enough plugs to charge phone & PCs, especially in the upstairs room. Undersized water closet pipes.

On my third stay in Ouro Preto we decided for the Grande Hotel, which exterior had caught my eye before. It looks modern but was already constructed in 1940, designed by famous architect Niemeyer. I love the design, especially the interior. It must have been something ahead of its time back then. It is still in good shape, but could do with a makeover, as the facilities are basic (bathrooms, lack of elevator) and the furniture etc. is dated. With such a overhaul, bigger beds and with less sweet stuff at breakfast, this hotel would do much better. The balconies offer great views of the town and the hotel is located well, close to the city center.

Stayed here for a weekend with family, unfortunately due to bad weather didn't get to laze around the little pool area. Rooms were comfortable, simple and had a good view of the area. Unfortunately I do not think there was much in the way of soundproofing as we could hear many conversations and were woken up by the noise. Breakfast was lovely and staff were professional, good location as far as tours etc. Good value and moderately priced.

Good afternoon, Roxxy, let's take a look at this noise issue so that we can evolve this issue. As for bad weather, what a pity! Come back in another opportunity, you'll love the city.

The only thing going for this hotel is the position in the town. The common area has a lovely view out and lunch on the deck is very enjoyable.
However, you can not see the view if sitting on your deck as there is a lattice fence in the way.
Sounds from the surrounding area affect your sleep.
It was great to open the windows and avoid the airconditioning.
The rooms are basic - the towels and linen thin though clean. The bathroom is small and the shower just OK.
The feeling in the rooms is of the 1950's and not in a good way.Very brown and dull. I think that the rooms should be given a freshen up. The carpet in the common area needs replacing. The notices in the rooms need replacing and the light fittings need to go.
Its handy to the local reataurants and it is a short walk up the hill to the square.

The hotel has perfect architecture: soundproofing, large rooms (two rooms connected by a spiral staircase) and a beautiful view of the city. But it needs urgent maintenance. The beds are tiny, the mattress is lousy, the living room and the balcony does not have enough furniture. The breakfast is bad, with poor quality products - the cheese bread (a type of bread typical of Minas Gerias) tasted horrible! For the price it charges, there are better options in the city.
