We booked and confirmed this hotel in June (six months ahead), with a credit card, this hotel for New Year's Eve. It's so busy that time of the year and we wanted to secure something. We received an email on the 29th of December letting us know that the "hotel had cancelled our reservation" with no reason. We called them right away and they said that their reservations department was closed (it was about 4pm during the week) and they just couldn't help us.

I was shocked. We have traveled all over the world and have never had anything like this happen to us. How rude and unprofessional. Clearly they got a better offer, but they left a party of 5 people with no place to stay in the Rio area on New Years Eve as all rooms were booked. We ended up staying more than an hour west of the city in a generic hotel.

Shame them.

The hotel is inside a woods like location which makes it very peaceful and relaxing. My room was outside in a chalet. The room was very large and the bathroom had a jacuzzi big enough for two. It is however a bit far from the attractions in the city and trips by taxi adds up. One annoying thing is that everytime you solicit a cab, the hotel charges you for it, so make sure to get the taxi driver's phone number and call him yourself. The service is a bit rough around the egdes but seemed to me that people wanted genuinelly to help. The restaurant at the hotel is usually not prepared to serve everything in the menu, so it's better to eat out.

Atelier Molinaro Boutique Hotel was a wonderful find. We found it on Trip Advisor and booked it through Booking.Com. It is located in the hilly outskirts of town, about 5 to 10 minutes out of the center of Petropolis. We had room #1, a large Master Suite that had a larger-than-King sized bed plus a separate small sitting room that would have had space for two more people (kids). The room opened onto a patio to the lovely garden. Breakfast was delicious and included. WiFi and parking are free.

The only problem we had was FINDING it. We rented a car at the Rio airport and had no problem at all getting to the city center of Petropolis. There our problems became evident. First, our Yahoo Maps directions were useless – we forgot to get them in Kilometers and our “miles” did us no good. Furthermore, there appear to be only TWO street signs in the entire of Petropolis so our street name turn-by-turn were totally useless, too. Thank goodness for the local McDonalds on Rua do Imperador (not to be confused with the only other street name we saw – Rua da Imperatriz, which intersects it!). We went into the McDonalds and one woman called the B&B and got directions then the young man who spoke a bit of English, translated and drew us a map. We never would have found it on our own as we do not speak Portugese and neither did the man on duty at the B&B (they do have several English speakers there during the day).

So – if you find yourself lost in Petropolis looking for Atelier… head towards the Cathedral, where you will pass it on your left, then make a left when the street stops. This will take you out of town towards Itaipava. Follow the signs for Itaipava for a few miles. On the way you will pass a police station on the left and go over two small bridges (the town has a creek running through most of the city and just about all the streets are one-way streets. ) Just past the second bridge, be on the lookout for a bus stop and a small sign on the right that has the hotel name. Head up this small hill and you’ll find it. It is worth it!

Room Tip: The bed in this room had a hard mattress. If you do not like hard mattresses, ask to try the other rooms. We paid about $200 a night -- a smaller room may have been cheaper.

The room was booked at the last minute for a very reasonable price, considering the infrastructure of this hotel and the high season. The hotel is located between Petropolis and Itaipava, so in the middle of the road - but just some 10 minutes away from downtown Petropolis. The room had a good size, and so did the bathroom - although as complaint in another review, the bathtub is not adequate for two people. The "kingsize bed" was in fact two single beds badly connected, with a mattress you can tell was there for a long time! The room had a very nice balcony, connected to the other rooms, with views from the forest. The lobby and others areas like the swimming were also very nice. What bothered me the most was some details: the toiletries / amenities were of bad quality and lacked a shower cap - when we arrived at breakfast there wasn't a table ready for us and after 10 minutes waiting I had to FIND someone to help. The hot milk finished and it took them another 10 minutes to replace (why some hotels haven't realized they should always have 2 bottles of hot milk and coffee?). Another big issue was the shower - you couldn't get a decent hot shower if others were having shower in the same time. The hot water kept coming and going all the time making the shower a complex job! They have to pay better attention to details to make this a great place - which is not a hard thing to do - details, details!
