Hotel San Marco Ipanema
Ranked #191 of 286 Hotels in Rio de Janeiro

Hotel San Marco, Rio de Janeiro

I stayed at the Hotel San Marco for 8 nights, which is advertised in the Let’s Go Brazil travel guide as the most inexpensive hotel in Ipenema, one of the nicest areas of Rio. The cost was a mere 840 reals for those 8 nights. The room was small, but had a/c, telephone and TV. The staff was friendly and helpful, but there wasn’t always an English-speaking employee on hand. For a budget traveler like myself, it was perfect. Breakfast was included in the price. I would recommend this hotel for people on a budget who want to stay in the better part of Rio and don’t mind not having a great view or spacious accommodations. The hotel is definitely a great value and although cheap you get more than what you paid for.

If you're looking for a relatively cheap, decent (yet basic) hotel in a safe neighbourhood in Rio, not too far from the action, the San Marco may actually be one of the better options. Rooms are basic but clean and the beds are comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. Location on the main street in Ipanema is convenient - close to the beach, fancy shopping and Leblon for some better dining and nightlife. Breakfast may not be as good as can be found elsewhere in Brazil but certainly acceptable. In all, price/quality ratio is okay for this one.

The hotel is in very good location (2 blocks to the beach and many buses go along the street on which the hotel is situated), but the rooms are rather worn out. The soundproofing is low and rooms are quite small. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean. There is also a fridge and a safebox in the room with a/c. The breakfast (included) was good although quite basic. Get a standard room instead of superior if you value silence, as the superior rooms face the buzzling street.

LOCATION/PARKING: This hotel is located in the wealthy Ipanema district of Rio de Janeiro. Because Ipanema is an exclusive area, hotels here cost much more than in Copacabana or other areas of Rio. However, I think it is worth the extra money to stay in Ipanema because the area is safe and there is a lot of police protection and extra security. This hotel is located on the main street of Ipanema, several blocks away from the beach. The hotel does not provide parking, and parking would probably be difficult to find in the immediate area.

COMPETITION: There are only three budget hotels in Ipanema: the Ipanema Inn, the Vermont, and this hotel. I stayed in the Ipanema Inn for two nights and didn't really like it that much, so I checked out and checked into this hotel instead.

PRICE: I paid US $43 per night for this hotel (Ipanema Inn cost US $51). The price is much higher during Carnival, New Year's Eve, and other special events.

ROOMS: The room had one large double bed, which could accommodate two people. The bed was very comfortable. The room had a private bathroom as well as a refrigerator. Another nice feature was that the room had a safe in which to put valuables. Because there is more crime in Rio than in the U.S., it is nice to be able to put your valuables in the safe, especially when going to the beach.

SERVICE: The hotel does provide good service, and the staff is friendly, helpful, and accommodating to guests. The hotel let me keep my belongings in their luggage storage area for several days when I went to another city. There was one problem, though. Many of the hotels in Rio (including Ipanema Inn and Caesar Park) practice a scam involving transportation. If a guest wants to go somewhere, the hotel will offer to take him using their own transportation service. However, the hotel then charges the guest SEVERAL TIMES MORE than it would cost to take a regular taxi. I fell for this scam several times before realizing that I was being ripped off. This hotel tried to do the same thing, but I adamantly refused and took a regular taxi instead, saving myself a lot of money in the process.

FOOD: A nice breakfast buffet is included in the room price.

SUMMARY: Overall, I would recommend staying here--the only negatives were the fairly high price (for Brazil) and the transportation scam.
