When you arrive at Battambang, there are probably TukTuk drivers, who want to take you to your hotel. If you have a reservation it's most of the time a free pick up. The TukTuk driver, tries to let you take a tour with him. At first we where a little sceptic, but it turned out to be a great experience. The Royal Hotel is very clean and has big rooms. The location is fine. It's easy to go from there to the central market or to the harbor for a boattrip to Siem Reap. Across the street is a very nice restaurant, with good food. The TukTuk driver we met, was called Dollar and he wanted us to take a tour. Because there is not much to do in the town of Battambang, we agreed. This guy was amazing. We travelled around for 7 or 8 hours and saw a lot of the countreyside. This was worth the trip to Battambang. If you go there I recommed you ask for Dollar, because his English is very good en he knows a lot of the things he'll show you.

First off, this hotel is well located in Battambang. We arrived by bus and the hotel was about 4 blocks away. The manager spoke english and showed us several rooms. He convinced us to take the large room with balcony for with a discount fo 15.00 USD total. Beautiful room, big bed, LCD TV and construction across the street. Breaking concrete is as bad as roosters. When we returned at 8 p.m., the karaoke had started nearby. The staff moved us to a room on the interior which was adequate. In the morning the manager was very apologetic and offered us a ride to the bus station. I won't return to Battambang. This hotel is good for an overnight and look around.

Room Tip: Choose an interior room to avoid road noise.

For 15 dollars a night for a large room, the Royal is a good value. Rooms clean. Ask for a room with balcony. No bathtub but shower with a instant water heater.
The staff is very nice and helpful.
Food on the terrace is so-so but the rooftop terrace is quite nice to have a drink.
Well located in Battambang. The Sunrise coffee house 25 meters down the street gives you a good breakfast alternative to the hotel's (breakfast not included in price).

Room Tip: with balcony.

We had a double aircon room and it was probably the best room we have had in SE Asia on our backpackers budget. The staff were very friendly and I can highly recommend a motorcycle driver by the name of Smay - reception should be able to book him for you. He is only 21 and due to his studies only has limited amount of time to provide his services but he was not only a good driver but a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide. The only let down in the Hotel Royal is the roof top, the food is good but it has no atmosphere which is a shame as it has potential to be a seriously good bar/social area which would make it easier for travellers to meet.

Had a really nice stay in the Royal. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and clean. Managed to bargain down to $17 a night for a double room. Only let down was the restaurant. No atmosphere, limited options. Could have more potential.
