Nomad Guesthouse & Cafe
Ranked #4 of 9 Coffee & Tea in Lijiang

We can only comment on the food and the excellent service provided by the very talented Dutch proprietor, Peter [as we were staying at the Hui Feng Inn, which doesn't ordinarily serve meals (see separate review)].

This is a vegetarian establishment and more care is taken with the food than in many restaurants. The menu is itself attractive and offers both a la carte and good value 'set' selections comprising, for example [in the case of breakfast], a freshly squeezed mixed fruit and/or vegetable juice (half size), fried potatoes with rosemary and baby toms, choice of eggs, toast & preserve and coffee or tea (38 yuan).

Portions are generous and a bowl of noodle soup with vegetables is almost a meal in itself. We're meat-eating vegetarians and the food here made a very nice change in itself, and especially from Chinese!

Even if you're on a day-trip from Lijiang and not dining then this is a great place to pause for a tea or coffee. Peter has a great selection all lovingly prepared and, whilst I noticed some inconsistency in the cheesecake, the apple strudel is excellent.

I am not staying there with owner Peter from Holland.
Passed by when I am wandering in the old town, I found it nice and warm looking inside the cafe.
Decided to start dining with coffee Latte as the beginning. Cannot believe that Peter can produced smooth not milk covering the excellent expresso base.
This is the only beginning !
I took my wife Annie and sister-in-law Nikki there the next day.
Nikki is vegetarian , so we decided to order tomato pasty and also apple strudel as desert .
100 percent vegetarian food guaranteed to readers here online. For apple strudel , it could compared with the one I did try in Vienna and Prague two years ago. The only difference is the sourcing problem in China for the flour powder and ice cream or cream. But, all food are cook well and care.
The last but the least, I would highly recommended the raw fruit juice. Don't missed the Juice with name " Secret ".
I am sure you love it.

Nomads is great spot for quick cup of coffee and a snack in Shuhe. Peter and the staff are very friendly.
It's location is convenient to the other parts and on relatively a quiet street, not well travelled by crazy tourists.
The food is the highlight, and a welcome relief to too much local cuisine. We love Chinese food but every so often it's nice to have a vegetarian pizza, or a sandwich and Nomads is the spot to meet that need.
Peter is very knowledgeable of the local area and was even able to help us find a night at Naxi guest house, even though we were not guests.

So if you are in Shuhe you shud stop in Nomads

Great tasting food, at very competitive prices, or should I say very cheap and certainly the best value for money of all the eating places that we tried whilst visiting Shuhe. The courtyard was quiet and a great escape from the busy touristy part of the village. Good selection of dishes particularly if you are tired of typical Chinese food and hotpot, with something a little different. Service was good and attentive.

The Nomad Cafe & Guesthouse is a special place in Shuhe Old Town in Lijiang. It caters to vegeterians and serves an ecclectic mix of simple nourishing dishes made with Buddhist care. A generous vegeterian noodle soup topped up with Apple Strudel and cream is an example of a simple yet heavenly meal. The ambiance is serene..there is also a courtyard where one may have Breakfast or a meal in al fresco sunshine. And spending lazy afternoons and post-dinner evenings over coffee or a pot of tea in the warm cafe with its comfortable seats is one way to relax after a hectic day of site-seeing.

The most interesting part of the Nomad Cafe is Peter, the owner who runs the place with his partner. He is a wonderful person..polite to the extreme...inforamtive...and knowledable not only about the surrounds but of esoteric aspects of Buddihism. You can be sure that interesting people come through the Nomad Guesthouse and you can have wonderful conversations far into the night. Peter graciously invites you to share a pot of tea.

Though I did not stay in the Guesthouse, it seemed serne and welcoming from outside. A Buddhist retreat of sorts.

hank you, Peter, for making my stay in Shuhe memorable.
