This market was huge, it covered a whole block and more, we walked and walked along the aisles of handmade items, leather goods, hats, and accessories. I loved the embroidered table runners and kitchen towels.

My wife and I took a group tour (20 pax in a minibus)that included an equator line visit (not the large Mitad del Mondo complex in northern Quito) and a stop at a Bizcochos cafe. We also visited Laguna Cuicocha. Lunch was included and there was time to do some leather shopping at Cotacachi. The highlight was the Otavalo market itself. We went on a Saturday. It is a large market but the 2 hours we had there were sufficient. It is a very interesting tour The tour company was Ecuatraveling and the guide was very good with excellent English. Prices paid by individuals on our bus varied from US$50 to $70 depending on the online booking agency. Booking direct with Ecuatraveling seemed to be the cheapest. It is a good tour and also gives an insight into the indigenous people’s culture.

We wanted to do a day trip from Quito to Otavalo Market and the nearby Lake Mojanda. We asked around the many travel agencies from Quito for this combined trip and was aghast to be informed that the price per person for such trip is $110-$120!!

So, we did some research and decided to do it independently. We took a taxi from our hotel to the Carcelan Bus Station (North) which costs us USD10. From there, we took the local bus which goes to Otavalo (last stop). It costs us only USD 2.50 per person. From the Otavalo bus Terminal, it was just a shot distance walk to the market.

If you want to buy souvenirs to bring home, this is the only place to shop – cheap and good quality stuffs, especially the paintings and alpaca scarves. Can’t find them any cheaper elsewehere.

Coming back from the Galapagos..we stayed some extra days in Quito. With a number of "things to do" on
our list ( which did not include eating guinea pig..step to far for us...) one was to visit the famous Otavalo Market.
We wanted to use local transport and tracked down a direct bus from Quito to the entrance to the market. The trip cost a couple of dollars each way, which considering the distance was for us amazing. We sat in the front of the bus as it twisted , turned , climbed and dropped through the amazing scenery en route...quite a ride.
Incredible market: local textiles, all forms of hand crafts, delicious "bites"....the food..veggies, fruit and endless spices was amazing ( couldn't stop taking pictures). We spent the whole day there and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth making the effort if you are in Ecuador....

We had a great day with our very knowledgeable guide, Pablo! He knew a great deal about the culture and history of Ecuador, and shared a lot of information with us about botany and the geography of the area. We enjoyed the market, a visit to the Leather City (with a typical churrascos style steak), and a stop at a lovely lake. Highly recommend
