The experience was great and whenever you go to Siwa, this place is a must go! Its story is very interesting and the view from the top is awesome.
Takes a little to find your way to the entrance of the Fortress but once you are there there is a LOT to climb on and to discover. There are no inscriptions or even recognizable buildings but this is a cool place to visit and to climb around.
So much fun to go there and see how anceint people were living their houses and how there lived their lives ,it was really great we enjoyed it lot <3
Historic fortress.. Just in the heart of downtown.. Shali in old Siwa means “City or Town” .. when you climb up to the top you can see all of Siwa here.. fascinating view >> all the palm trees & salt lake & houses of Siwa
Going down you will find the hand crafts shops with colorful simple goods – very reasonable prices that you will be surprised to have all these goods in a good deal.. dates box is a good gift from Siwa
Life is a trip.. ENJOY
Siwa oasis hosted for millennia a very isolated oasis community with its own distinctive culture and language. It was only after a pave road was built from Marsa Matrouh to Siwa in the 1970s that the isolation rapidly reduce. Shali Fortress, as all traditional Siwa housing, was built with kharshef, a mix of clay and salt which is unique building material and excellent for a hot climate as Siwa. It rains rarely in Siwa but if it does kharshef easily crumbles and deteriorates with water, in particular if maintenance is lacking. Thus the ruins of Shali Fortress are destined to further deteriorate over decades to come. As they are now they are a great reminder to the days that Siwa was still an isolated and hard to access desert oasis.
