This is a hard review to write really as the trip was such a mixed bag. Arriving at the resort we were amazed by the beauty of the place; set high up on the hillside, the traditional thai looking, wood clad decking and reception area takes in some amazing views. The huts, whilst basic, were clean and charming, as was the outdoor bathroom (minus the ants that lived in the toilet). We stayed in some comparable places, but all at far more than the 800 baht a night we paid (room is discounted if you dive with New Heaven).

Being extremely hot and sunny, our first thoughts were to hit the beach, and there in was the first disappointment. Heading down to the water you have to navigate a winding and steep set of steps before trying to climb down a disused dirt road, probably as much as 5 tricky minutes in total. Still, that was not the end of the world. Getting to the water however, that was. The secluded area is essentially just a set of dirty and slippery steps in to a rocky patch of water. Trying to navigate my way in I was knocked over by the strong waves, leaving me with multiple cuts to my arms and back as a memento.

At this point I did realise just how secluded the hotel is. Unless you want to pay for taxis to and from, Baan Talay is completely isolated. Whilst tranquility and seclusion is nice, the inability to go anywhere else was frustrating, even in this nice setting. It didn't help that by 9 o'clock or so, you got the feeling you needed to finish your drinks and go to the room. The staff by this point would begin standing over the table, making it very awkward.

The biggest problem though over the whole stay was that the resort isn't really run by anybody. Three girls work there, but they speak limited English and can't help you with most things. This became a huge problem at check out for ourselves and another couple. We discovered when overheard in a conversation that you couldn't actually check out at the hotel itself, but had to go all the way in to the Dive School in town. The free car ride to the school goes only at 8.30 or 1.30 though, meaning leaving hours early, or in our case, potentially missing your boat to Chumphon. As such, we tried to explain at the hotel that we'd need a lift to the Dive School earlier so as not to miss our 2.30 boat (2 o'clock check in). The staff weren't able to understand on the multiple ocscasions though. Eventually I contacted Dev at the school who said that would be no problem and we'd be there with time to spare. Our check out time came though and no sign of the car, with it eventually showing at nearly 2pm. We barely made our boat, being among the last people to arrive at the dock.

The lack of English speaking or management presence at the hotel is probably the biggest gripe really. Unless you are regularly at the diving school (doing a PADI Open Water or other) then it is quite hard to solve any issues that might arise, and indeed it gets quite boring.

Still good value, but only if you are diving elsewhere in the day and returning in the eve. Lastly, as mentioned elsewhere, the mosquito nets are far too small for the bed, they just end up on your face as you sleep.

I am sorry to hear that your stay with us was as disappointing as your review sounds. In fact i was surprised to see such negative comments and as you can see your review is the first to describe our place as 'poor'. usually the beauty of the place and surrounding nature more than makes up for the lack of english that some of the staff may have, the staff are always friendly and helpful if spoken to the right way, sometimes its good to learn some of the culture and language from the places you visit instead of expecting everything the same as in your country.
The entry point for snorkeling is tricky only when the weather is bad which on koh tao is not very often on koh tao. I feel some of your other comments are also unfair for example

'The staff by this point would begin standing over the table, making it very awkward.'
Never happens, the staff are just waiting for you to finish eating so they can go to bed, they are working and wake up at 7 am every morning, of course you are welcome to sit on the open deck varanda for as long as you like.

'The secluded area is essentially just a set of dirty and slippery steps in to a rocky patch of water. '
No, the secluded area as sun beds and shaded wooden umbrella's and the steps lead to a wonderful coral reef. Your comments make it sound like a rubbish tip !!

The power of trip advisor is very important for small resorts like us, we always hope that our guest enjoy their stay with us and are disappointed when they leave without a smile and good memories.
I feel that your comments are unfair and i hope it doesn't put others people off to send a few days in a natural environment where the owners have made a conscious effort to preserve the nature and keep koh tao beautiful.

we stayed 10 days in the sea view suites and loved it! the view as well as the frequent visits from squirrels and beautifull gekkoes formed a relaxing nature experience.

staff is super nice and professional and the restaurant is both tasty and with an unbeatable view over the bay.

The price of both the rooms and the food is incredible compared to the standard.

A little difficult to access though but that can be fixed with renting a scooter or using the free taxi shuttles at fixed times.

Baan Talay was an amazing place to stay...stumbled across it when we couldn't find any accomodation through New Heaven dive shop.
The rooms had the most amazing view and were very clean and comfortable, all for such a reasonable price!
Mimi and her team were there to help with anything and were right there to serve any food and drink which all tasted delicious!
Highly recommend to stay here, could not get any more friendly and helpful people along with the amazing view!

This hotel is worth to know about! I was made aware of the existence trough the website of New Heaven Diving and they gave me a very nice price for the stay over there.

We had a sea view suite and sea view it was! Beautiful view that keeps you amazed day and night (night for the stars)

Room is good and comfortable (except the mosquito net was too low and was almost an extra cover). It's cleaned before your arrival but after that no one will enter your room to clean it (but if you need new towels or sheets, they will be happy to give you). We had a Mouse the last evening who went all over our stuff, but that's nothing the hotel can do about. But if you're afraid of animals in the room, avoid staying on the island as Gekko's are everywhere and they will enter the room!

The road that leads to the hotel could scare more than one, but if you stay over there, you go there because you want to relax in the evening and not be bothered by loud music or others that you would have on Sairee Beach!

The food in the hotel is good though and VERY reasonable prices. They don't surcharge you just because you have nowhere else to go, which is nice!

The hotel will provide free transfer to the dive center and back 3 time per day (morning 8:30, noon 13:30 and evening 17:30), but if you're not diving, timing can be restrictive.

If you want to be more independent and not pay very high charges for taxi's on the island, rent a motorbike (take a automatic one and be careful of the scams! Make a good tour of the bike and make sure they are aware of all the scratches BEFORE you go).

They have a great spot for snorkeling just under the hotel, but no private beach and very rocky! Make sure to wear some shoes that can go in the water as the access to the water is quite difficult.

For the rest, in the rooms you have no TV, no WIFI (at least it was not working when I was there) and nothing to do but enjoy the place, and relax after a good day of diving in Koh Tao...

Room Tip: The best views are in the sea view suites...

Baan Talay is a beautiful spot nestled at the top of a hill overlooking a quiet bay. Rooms and bathrooms are tastefully and naturally designed and just lovely. Staff are sweet and friendly and helpful, although I went at a quiet time and at odd times of the day I needed to find them. If you are looking for a getaway that gets you away from it all, this is the spot. I would have stayed longer only its a pricey taxi ride to and from if you don't want to go at the early morning and lunchtime slot of the their own taxi service. But really beautiful and just a little walk down the hill to a great snorkelling spot. And a hammock on your balcony over looking the bay! Lovely!

Room Tip: If its a bit colder - get the hot water shower, otherwise in the summer, cold water is fine!
