Went with my wife as part of a Borneo rain forest tour group .

Initial impression was good as the hotel looked impressive from the outside and in the foyer area.

Our room was of average size and met expectations, apart from my sheet which, when I finally got in to bed, was stained!

We went down to dinner and our pre-ordered meal was finally delivered about an hour later which was unacceptable. House wine was charged at just under £30 per bottle with premium wines considerably more.

Breakfast was very poor... we arrived at opening time only it wasn't open! When we finally sorted that out and got them to switch the lights on there was no hot food and the egg station was unmanned. The whole thing was a bit "fawlty towers" and we muddled through with forks and spoons as that's all there was to eat with. What a disaster!

When we checked out the guy in front of me advised that I check my bill as he had been overcharged... sure enough my bill was about £20 more than it should have been for no apparent reason because the bills I had signed for were present - they just weren't what was shown on the bill. That took another 20 minutes to sort out despite it not being my fault in any way. Of course there was no apology!

Arrived at this hotel and had positive outlook for our short stay, welcomed then went to a very good room and boy the wifi was good after not being able to get a signal when in the jungle. Once we had partially unpacked decided to go for a swim, after a long day in a coach this was really needed. The pool looked good but oh boy the surround was really rough on your feet making it very uncomfortable, getting to the slide was even worse.
Went for our evening meal, good job our guides had booked seating as it was manic. Lots of people filling up plates with food ( most of it then thrown away) , we struggled to get food and when they out out fresh food it was pounced on and soon gone. We had enough to eat on the night by having bits as we could.Went down for breakfast the next morning to find nearly all the food had gone because of people coming to eat early. No one wanted to put anything else out for us, again our guides had to speak with management to get some food put out ( note to Senior Managers : it shouldn't have taken others to get us food, we had paid the same as others!!!).
Please you need to treat all guests the same!
As I said "tale of 2 halves", room etc good food etc very poor!!

Sandakan doesn't have a great deal to offer, other than as transit to the fabulous river and island experiences available nearby, but, if you are staying over in Sandakan, this is an excellent, and quite affordable place to stay. The pool is excellent, the rooms clean and comfortable, the staff friendly and helpful.

Rooms very good and spacious, good bathroom. For us, the Chinese restaurant was not so tasty. Alcohol is only served out on the terrace. If you order 'white wine' its just that, any old wine. Got the impression this was just to placate the tourists. Convenient hotel for the animal sanctuaries though.
