We stayed here for two nights in February 2012. The hotel is well located for Kandy, about a 15 minute drive from the Temple of the Tooth. The rooms were fine, well sized with everything you'd need. There was a lot if building work going on whilst we were there which would have been annoying if we'd been spending more time in the hotel. The pool is nice with lots of sunbeds. The food in the buffet was fine, nothing gourmet but acceptable for a night or two. Service at the bar was a bit hit and miss; we were lucky to get a smile from the barman and when ordering drinks around the pool it could take up to 20 mins to get served. I probably wouldn't recommend this as I imagine there are better hotels available, but it would be perfectly acceptable for a 1 or 2 night stay.

We started off disappointed as they informed us they do nothing special for honeymoon couples- which was really silly of them as they had dining by the river, massages etc that would have suited us fine and we would have paid extra for these things.
The hotel grounds are beautiful and well manicured. The pool a delight. Dining was always a fun experience and the live music in the evenings made for a magical ambience.
Unfortunately there were some works going on at the time but they did not start too early or go too late.
Restaurant staff were very helpful and overall we very much enjoyed our stay.

The Mahaweli Reach hotel is an acceptable place to stay if you are visiting Kandy for business or pleasure. I am not sure what the star rating is, but it is in international terms a 3 star quality hotel.

Positives:

1) Good location on the river
2) Has some old-world charm (Raffles type old colonial style)
3) Acceptable food/decent outdoor bar (that is deserted like all of the bars in Kandy)
4) Acceptable rooms w decent conveniences (TV, internet, mini-bar, etc.)
5) Good pool

Could be better:

1) Rooms/facilities dated - some upgrades to amenities, but overall dated
2) Service slow
3) Overall feels a bit shabby
4) Just not a top-end hotel

With all of that said, there are no great hotels in Kandy in my experience. Even the best hotels (e.g. Earl's Regency, some of the newer hotels) are 3-star quality, and it is not a place to go for pure luxury in any case. Know what to expect and you will be fine - sleep quality good, clean enough, you won't get sick from the food, decent views of river etc.

Kandy itself is worth a day to see the temple, botanic gardens, etc. and as a way-station to tea country and cultural zone, but don't expect any nightlife (really - everything shuts down at 1800 or so), international-level shopping (really just handicrafts/gems for foreigners to buy) or high-end luxuries.

All in all, not a great hotel, but a good option given choices in Kandy. If choosing between this and Earl's Regency, I'd go for Earl's Regency.

We stayed here for a couple of nights whilst touring the island. Kandy itself is a fair old walk away, and the area around the hotel is a bit shabby. The hotel though is nice. It has big rooms and a nice pool. The views of the river are relaxing during the day and stunning at dusk when hoards of huge "flying fox" bats come alive and fly over the river and feeding. Not normally a fan of bats ut it was an amazing sight as there were so many and they were so big. The restaurant is western food which actually came as a nice change as we had been eating so much spicy local food on the tour. Whilst in Kandy two things are an absolute must. First go to the music and dance shows - they are touristy but really well priced and a very entertaining evening. Second go to the tooth relic temple at night. The atmosphere is amazing. The hotel is a good base to explore the hill country if you have a car/driver or other transport but otherwise is located just a bit too far from the centre of Kandy and the lake.

Room Tip: If you can, get a room overlooking the river or the pool.
