While often on vacation you want to stay longer, but this place really defines a special spot. The resort on Bastimentos is about 20 minute boat ride from Bocas Town on Isla Colon. The over-the-water bungalows with private patios and see-thru "windows" were awesome with great beds and a lot of stylish design touches inside; the owners / staff (Malena, Chango, Elaina) were readily available to help, super friendly, warm and welcoming; and while no piece of paradise is cheap, we thought it was a really good value. The meals were all good, plus getting breakfast delivered to your room was a great touch. We only found this place via TripAdvisor, and it seemed too good to be true reading the reviews, but felt very lucky to have found such a perfect place to wrap up our two weeks in Panama. We did several great boat tours to some of the main spots like Red Frog Beach and Zapatillas.

Which would lead to the only suggested improvement -- maybe its due to how relatively new this resort is and haven't had a ton of requests or maybe the owners experience / preferences, but asking about some of the more off the beaten path tours that we read about in the guidebook* (i.e., seeing the turtles at night on Playa Larga, going to Quebrada de Sal to hike or see any of the interior forests / caves of Bastimentos Parque) there wasn't much offered or knowledge about if/how to do it or arrange it. We were only there a couple days so had plenty to do and wanted some tranquilo time anyway, but if you are staying longer or interested in something like this would ask in advance or try to arrange separately.

*Speaking of guidebooks not sure if I'll get to a separate entry on this, but we found the Moon Book (has lots of great details, especially if you are driving anywhere across Panama, believe the author is working on more updates as of June '08 for a new edition) and Frommer's (most current with prices and updates) to be really helpful. Unless its been updated, do NOT get Lonely Planet (we bought it but left it at home).

We just returned from 3 nights at Eclypse de Mar and wish we had stayed longer. Malena, Chango, and Elaina worked to make our stay pleasant and fun. Loved the bungalows with their large, comfortable beds, modern baths, and relaxing in our hammock. The only downsides were the morning breakfast which includes hard bread/jams and coffee or tea (anything else is an extra charge) and our unit had a problem with the hot water heater not working during our stay. Their daily snorkel/water tours with Salsa the boat driver provided good snorkeling and beautiful sand beaches. Even the local food stands during our tour had great cuisine. We would not even consider looking for an outside tour operator.....even if the cost was less. With regard to food, our dinner at the restaurant was good but better cocktails can be found in town. We enjoyed Iguana for cocktailing, Buena Vista for dining, but avoid Lemongrass for dinner. There is a new restaurant/lounge called 9 Degrees that has a lovely interior, good drinks, and gourmet menu. Eclypse de Mar and Bocas Town made for the perfect tropical vacation.

room were very clean, great view, fresh fish every night, owner on site, very helpful. would recommend this hotel for a very relaxing stay, you can swim right off your front porch. only recommendation would be to plan trips to bocas proper in the early evening, my husband and i went into town for dinner which requires a water taxi, ($2.50 per person each way) then had a little bit of a difficult time finding a ride home after 730pm the water taxis during the week stop running early.

I heard about Eclypse de Mar from Trip Adviser. Malena, the owner, was very nice as I called to reserve the room. She uses a cell phone and seldom leaves the property. Malena will do her very best to make your stay memorable on the positive side. She and her staff are great and very personable. They will make the arrangement for you to get to the lodge. It costs about $12 for 2 people from airport to lodge. It is very easy to get back and forth to Bocas town by water taxi,as it is only about 1 mile away and $3 each way per person.

We stayed 3 nights the 2nd week in April. The cabanas over the water are very peaceful and very nice. The restaurant at Eclypse de Mar is also nice with reasonable prices. Try the Calamari, it is really good. They will even bring you breakfast in bed.

Salsa is the name of their boatman. He is a very nice man. We can't say enough nice about it. Malena greets you and says good-bye with a kiss on the cheek. I made the reservations without my wife knowing where we were staying. I got an A+ from her and I have to pass the A+ to Malena and her staff. It has to be one of the best places to stay in the Bocas area.

We also met some very nice people there from B.C. Canada and Canary Islands.

We fell in love with the hotel as soon as we spotted it from the boat. Stylish interior designed wooden chalets built over the water with spacious verandahs and hammock. This is the ideal place to relax! We had a bedroom with four-poster bed, separate lounge and bathroom, all beautifully designed with home comforts. Malena from Argentina runs the hotel with her husband and is very helpful and friendly. Breakfast is excellent with homemade juice and beautiful bread, and can be served in your room. I can't think of a more beautiful place to be than on the verandah overlooking the ocean; it's so quiet and serene. The hotel is a two minute boat ride from the main jetty in Bastimentos which has a few restaurants to choose from or 15 minutes from Bocas town.
