“Disappointing!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

We stayed in the Tower Wing of the Taj for part ( we had to leave at 1 30am) of our last night in India. Our room faced the Gate of India and was spacious ( nor butler button in evidence like the Oberoi!) altough the bathroom was surprisingly small , We regretted that we had so little time to spend here as the view was quite stunning.

The service and food in the retaurant were very disappointing. The service was extremely slow and it took a long time for each of us to be served the result being that the food was cold when it arrived. It was the most expensive food we ate in India and was certainly some of the poorest. We would not have eaten there again had we been staying longer.

The hotel had the feel of a big business consortium where individuals were not particularly important. MOST DISAPPOINTING!

We stayed at this hotel as part of our trip to India and can honestly say it was amazing. The checkin was smooth and efficient and our room in the tower wing was very luxurious. We requested a sea facing room on a high floor which i'd strongly recommend as we had a first class view of the Gateway to India. The property is kept in exquisite condition and we particularly enjoyed the surroundings of the hotel pool bar after exploring the madness of Bombay.... The fact half a Kingfisher cost £4 tainted the experience somewhat but the chili snacks they served made it almost worthwhile lol....

We didn't eat at the hotel unfortunately as we always try and experience the delights the local restaurants have to offer where ever we go and my god we were impressed.... every meal we had out was first class and so cheap (dinner in a decent restaurant was no more than £20 and that included quite a few large kingfishers) People try and scare you about eating food from the locals in India but we ate anything we fancied for 2 weeks and we didn't even have a twinge!

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room on a high floor which is sea facing

Stayed here for a night at the end of a trip around India and had a room on the 9th floor of the tower, with a view over the sea and the Gateway to India.

Room was nice, view amazing and the entire hotel is spotless and beautifully maintained.

The tower definitely lacks some of the character of the heritage wing, but is more affordable and allows access to most of the same facilities.

The pool area was great, with attentive staff who provide towels, reading materials and water.

The staff throughout the place are incredible - running baths, making towel sculptures, constantly checking everything is okay, bringing etc towels etc. They are always polite and friendly and give the impression that nothing is too much trouble. We had a late check out at 4pm and then stayed around to use the facilities - including the fantastic spa and gym - until our flights very late the following night.

The whole hotel is totally relaxing and lives up to expectations in terms of its historical ambience and atmosphere. They run daily 'Heritage Tours' of the place, which helped put the hotel into context and was a nice way to learn about its history.

The only complaint is the price of the food and drinks. You expect to fork out in a place like this, but with beers at 300 rupees each, plus luxury tax on top, it's more expensive even than similar places in London. The food we had was good, but seemed totally overpriced.

But that aside, it was a great stay, provided a blissful oasis of peace after a fortnight in hectic India, and I'd love to think we'll return one day,

My stay at the Taj was a remarkable experience, all thanks to the impeccable service and an eye for detail. The tower wing does need some renovation but am willing to go back again and again just to experience their warm hospitality. the Taj people know how to pamper their guests. Laxman at Shamiana was excellent and he knew his job well. Staying at the Taj Mahal Palace is an experience in itself and I feel some small things can be overlooked to get the bigger picture. The location is awesome and the area around itself is a shoppers paradise, with beautiful historical buildings and eateries that cater to all kinds of palates.

Room Tip: Sea facing rooms offer an amazing view.

Recently was in Mumbai and went to Taj Mahal Palace, beautiful hotel..but cannot say the same for the service and food..it was dismal. We went to the Sea Lounge for High Tea. Was sorely disppointed. The quality of food was BAAAD. They had a crepe station...had to ask the chef THREE times before we got the crepes. The cutlery was tarnished silver. The staff had no idea regarding clearing plates etc. Gosh..I think for the flagship hotel of this chain the food and service would be top notch. Anyone planning to go for a visit or meal...think again..
