“Our first taste of Heritage hotels did NOT disappoint”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

After an overnight train journey we arrived early in the morning (6am) and expected to be turned away for several hours. We were greeted warmly and shown to a lovely, well-appointed room within minutes. The decor is unusual and attractive. It is almost like a visitor attraction and hotel wrapped into one establishment. We ate in the rooftop restaurant and were impessed by the overall standard. We would recommend this hotel for a memorable experience of Rajasthan

We recently stayed at this hotel for the second time in five years, and noted that it had expanded since our first stay, and has more rooms and a pool.
We opted for a royal suite and got room 211, away from the kitchen, which was spacious but effectively an internal room. It is T-shaped with windows at the foot of the stalk that lead to a small balcony that looks over the neighbouring apartments and their carpark. It was therefore dark and the internal walls were actually darkened/toughened glass with curtains covering them. So we got quite a lot of noise when people walked past (thankfully not too often). It was OK, but we expected something better.
The room was well serviced and nicely decorated, and the bed was good and firm. The linen was good quality. The bathroom towels were OK, and the shower was spacious with reasonable pressure.
The staff were good - sometimes very good, but occasionally a bit surly. There are taxis and rickshaws right outside the hotel (as a previous observer noted, apparently organised by the same guy and they overcharge) but we usually walked around the corner and hailed our own. There are ATMs close to the hotel.
We ate a few times at the rooftop restaurant, and the food was fine, and there were beer and spirits available. We didn't have wine (not sure if it was available - don't recall). We got a bit tired of the same Rajasthani floor show each night (we've seen similar on a previous visit) but it is a novelty for new visitors.
My husband thought the breakfast was good, with a reasonable amount of variety, Indian and western food. I thought it was OK, and I liked the cardamom in the porridge.
But in this day-and-age they're still charging for internet access on the PC in the lobby - just as they were five years ago - and that's really not on.
Airport transfers both ways went smoothly - both in an Ambassador, which was fun.
It took a few days for me to work out what was "missing" for me at this place. We spent a lot of time at Diggi Palace for the Jaipur Literature Festival, which has nice grounds. Then I realised the UB doesn't have a GARDEN. Maybe it's my time of life, but I found this hotel a bit claustrophobic, and would have liked space around it. They've really built out the block with this hotel, and while there are balconies and nooks-and-crannies, it does feel closed in (except on the roof). One night a large-ish group were on a balcony talking with music (NOT rowdy) but the noise rebounded around the building and was so disruptive we had to complain to reception. The problem was more the design of the building than the people and their noise, I think.

I love this building! Handpainted details everywhere, amazing architecture, really feels like old world India. Our room was their basic room and it was ok. Nothing fancy, old drapes, blah mattress, ok bathroom. The bathroom was a little musty, but I left the window open (with screen) and it cleared up. The hot water was an issue. Nearly impossible to take a shower, which is why they give you a bucket system. If you let the water run for 10 minutes, then you can fill your bucket and use the smaller buckets to take a ladle shower. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. Free WiFi - great connection. Free breakfast - nice spread. Roof top restaurant was a wee bit chilly in Feb., but served up decent fare. We had some dishes that were too salty, and some that were spot on. Make sure to get the naan - you can watch it being made (awesome). Hotel restaurant was reasonably priced. We were happy with our stay overall. If I had to do it again, I'd try to upgrade, the larger rooms looked much nicer than ours.
