We were seeking an upmarket couples destination in Fiji, and were recommended to Matamanoa Island, having been to islands in Fiji, this one is a little further out, but seemed to be the relaxation we needed. When we first arrived, it was a wet arrival, meaning we had to take our shoes off to get off the boat, no problem, and initially I thought it might not have enough to do during our 10 day stay, well I was so far from it, it went so quickly, it suddenly was time for our departure. The rooms were very comfortable, although a bit of a walk to dinner, brekky, which after a few days was actually a good way to utilise some of the calories eaten. Drinks are expensive, so watch for that one, and every opportunity to get your dollars, if you are after a budget holiday, this place is not for you. Staff were friendly. The trip to Castaway Isle was fun and most of the other tourists on the island were very sociable. The plunge pool was very warm, more of a birdie boiler during the heat of the day. Snorkelling around the island is good, but you do need to pick your times and area, we saw a reef shark and lots of fish very close in to shore.
Cons were, that there was a constant stream of Chinese visitors who smoked constantly, and some were incredibly rude, talking loudly whilst the evening cultural and welcome/farewell shows were on which was incredibly disrespectful and some very rude to the beautiful Fijian people. Others bought their drones with cameras along, which is not permitted in Fiji without a permit and registration, and they rudely looked directly into our bure for several minutes which we immediately reported to management and they were reprimanded, but did not stop them from doing it a few days later. Drinks are expensive. Food is on a weekly cycle, and some days better than others, suggest only going for brekkie and dinner, we had a full package and couldn't eat it all.
Overall, we had a great time and would definitely go back again, I would suggest having one of the beachfront bures for the best experience, the Villas are a LONG walk to the main centre and in December you get a lot of the Matamanoa birds which are very loud at night and in the Villa area primarily, the garden bures are VERY average, ok if you are watching the $, however in my opinion, pay the bit extra and get the beachfront view.
