The menu is simple and straightforward they serve dumplings with the different fillings. They also serve clear soup with various toppings.

Our favorite stuffing for the dumpling was one with salted egg yolks. Heavenly.

Ask for a spoon when visiting.
Pick up the xiao long bao using chopsticks and rest it on the spoon while we bite a tiny hole on the side of the dumpling and suck the soup from it.

This was a local delight. The xiao long bao were delicious. It was also very cost effective. It's important to note that they only have various fillings available on certain days. We had the crab meat and pork dumplings. We were gutted we couldn't try the plain pork or the pork and shrimp! It would be worth going on multiple days to try all of the flavours. Definitely a food highlight of our trip to shanghai! It's a very small restaurant so there is usually a line but it moves relatively quickly.

The quintessential Shanghainese experience...
Sweltering humidity, Chinese big city eatery atmosphere and cleanliness (people like to call this authenticity, whatever that means).

Get in, get bossed around by the lady at the counter (she will only allow you to order from a limited few dishes on the menu if like me your Mandarin skills are non-existent),pay her, wait for diners to free up a space on a table, take a seat and wait for astoundingly delicious soup dumplings (you will probably have to ask for a spoon) and if you're lucky the person claiming the seat next to you might be friendly enough to you (or even speak some English).

Stop analysing and just go, puritans have their spots for best dumplings but if you haven't been just go- these ladies know what they're doing with these dumplings!

Busy mix of western and mostly locals. Get an order of the crab and pork, as well as pork only. Nom nom.

In Shanghai for a couple of days in transit to Europe, I had googled "best soup dumpling" and came up with Jia Jia Tang Bao (even Rick Stein raved about this one), so off we went (my wife and I) in search of this gem on Huanghe Road. We stood in a long queue for over 30 minutes, diligently put "soup dumpling" into our English/Mandarin ready to show to the lady taking orders. She looked at the screen, laughed and then gave us an English Menu! We ordered a dozen crab & pork dumplings, were seated and in five minutes we were served. We asked for Soy Sauce (I prefer that to Chinese Vinegar Sauce) but were told (in Mandarin) to have the order (Vinegar) sauce. The dumplings were superb!! We were entertained by the five very hard working dumpling makers who were making these things with amazing speed and dexterity. We had 12 dumplings for 30 CNY ($NZ6.00)!!!
