We stayed at Quintet for 4 nights and I would highly recommend this B&B. Our room was very tastefully furnished with a comfortable king size bed. The bathroom had a great big bathtub which was also rigged with a shower head & curtain. The bathroom included bath salts, great body lotion & shampoo. Bath linens were sparkling white and luxurious. There is no smoking permitted in the rooms but there is a wonderful roof top area where smoking is allowed.

The breakfast is served in the restaurant which is on the 1st floor. It is a set menu with 4 choices which included oatmeal with raisens, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt and more.

The manager YaYa is wonderful. She assisted us by providing directions and writing things down in Manderin for us.

This is a warm & friendly place to stay. A little like staying with friends or family.

Our trip to Shanghai had to be cancelled on short notice due to a volcano eruption in Europe in April 2010. The manager was very accommodating and refunded our deposit.

This is quite a pleasant hotel in a good part of Shanghai. Staff are very helpful but not all speak English. Decor is nice. A tight squeeze up stairs if that is an issue for you. Unlike other reviewers I didn't like the breakfast, but I'm clearly in the minority. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed at in China, but that's Shanghai for you and good quality bargains are hard to find. Taxis are cheap and available but the traffic is a nightmare. The metro is close and better for getting around but it can be incredibly crowded, so some might prefer traffic jams. Wait until after the expo if you can - half the city is a construction site, especially around the Bund. Quite a number of good eating places in the few blocks around the hotel.

We stayed for 4 nights at Quintet during one of Shanghai's rainiest periods, which added to the coziness and comfort that we enjoyed at Quintet. I echo the comments made by njttravelling earlier, and add that Quintet provides a personality and a personal level of thoughtful service that is unique to the most memorable B&B's in the world.

The smallest room, though perhaps small for people travelling with large suitcases, was immaculately clean and well designed. You do feel that you're staying a friend's home, who happens to have wonderful design tastes. There is dark drapes to keep out the early morning light, air conditioning, and even a flatscreen TV and a selection of DVD's for you to choose from in the room. The bathroom also has a deep soaking tub, fantastic after a long trip. Best of all, there's also an in-room safe and free wireless! Lots of thoughtful details.

Fay and the staff provide just enough suggestions on where to eat and visit to make you feel comfortable on your arrival--but not overwhelmed. There's a highlighted map to the French Concession provided--the location in the French Concession is one of the major draws for me to stay at Quintet. There is so much history in the neighborhood and it's easier to see how real Shanghainese live.

The included breakfast each morning downstairs in the intimate Closed Door Restaurant was high quality and delicious. We were very impressed by the flavors and the standard of Italian cooking being put out by the chef. Considering the prices we saw at other Western food establishments in Shanghai, a meal at the Closed Door is worth it. Plus, the staff speak English very well.

That said, there are also fantastic local places for traditional Chinese breakfast items, but you'll need to walk around before 9am.

You are given a key to enter Quintet from the back door any time you'd like, as the staff leave after around 6 or 7pm and return again around 7am. Hence, Quintet is most suitable for the independent traveler. Because of the structure of Quintet's central staircase, staff members talking and walking up and down or talking in the office in the morning will echo through the rooms on the lower levels, makes it difficult for those who may be late sleepers. This was the only real drawback to Quintet for me--but again, perhaps not much different from staying at a good friend's home.

For me, Quintet offers a truly unique experience in Shanghai and fantastic value for those wanting the local flavor. I highly recommend it.

My siser and i stayed attic room at the quintet for 2 nights in september. The location was in a quiet area with metro stop a short (15min)walk away. The room was compact and small so sharing for more than a few nights might not suit everyone. We planned to be sleeping in the room and sightseeing so did not mind. It was very nicely decorated and had a private terrace which would have been lovely if it were dry. Lots of stairs and no lift to room so again may not suit everyone.

We loved the interiors and the breakfast at quintet. The oatmeal was lovely, there was plenty of choice and the little restraunt very quaint. I had gotten sick before arriving at the hotel and the staff were extremely helpful offering to refer me to a doctor and pointing me in the direction of the pharmacy. We took the hotel pick up option and a taxi collected us from the airport and delivered us to the hotel. The hotel reception is not 24 hours and entrance to the hotel is via a very cute italian restraunt or via back door which is down an alley. This might not be to everyone's taste but my sister and i liked the intimacy of the small hotel. Bed was comfy, bathroom compact but well designed. We felt it was like staying in a room at a friends rather than a big purpose built hotel. Price was reasonable good value for a big city like shanghai.
