Shanghai JC Mandarin Hotel

This hotel is a little deceiving, what with the brand name, the five star rating, and the posh lobby. However, the rooms fall spectacularly below expectations - the rooms look too brown and dreary and everything just seems a tad too old. Like many reviewers said, I'm sure the rooms have seen better days. The toilet looked like it belonged in the nineties. You just don't get that special touch of luxury that you would expect of a five star hotel. It's not to say that the rooms are really poor, they just don't live up to five star standards, that's all. Breakfast was nothing to shout about - the variety does not compare well with other five star hotels and most of the dishes were not very well done. I certainly did not enjoy it much and would have prepared paying a bit for breakfast outside.

Location, however, is great as you would be in the middle of everything and you would not have to travel much to get to most of the places you would want to visit in Shanghai.

Large character less rooms, Great breakfast, language i.e. English a big concern!
Excellent Location, very convenient to move around while in Shanghai.
Bathroom needs desparate renovation, the water pressure in shower if of dismal quality.
Food is expensive.
Hotel claims 5 star. At best can be passed off as an international 4 star,

We stayed for 7 nights, very cheap rate around $100 AUD on the 20th floor and included breakfast. First enter, the staff were friendly and helpful, lobby was lovely. Got up to the rooms the 20th floor had a view of the shops downstairs montblanc and gucci, but the bathroom was a disappointment, very old and run down. The location was great, 5 minutes to metro line 2 which was very convinient as the metro took us almost anywhere. WUJIANGrd leisure st was also 5 minutes away next to the subway which had great shanghai signature foods. Macdonalds and supermarket were also short distance away. Overall happy stay with the location and the price of the hotel.

A typical business style hotel. The rooms lack warmth, but are adequate. The staff were nothing to write home about, maybe at times a little rude. The breakfast buffet appears impressive, but actually lacks variety when compared to other 4-5 star hotels. The location is OK, maybe better for business as opposed to leisure. There are shopping and markets within walking distance but when I return to Shanghai I will choose another hotel in a more desirable location- I would also avoid the piano bar which is in the basement, got the feeling it was for men only ;)

I stayed at the Shanghai JC Mandarin largely due to its proximity to the CBD area, where my office was. I thought I couldn't go wrong with the Mandarin brand, and was foolishly expecting the 5-star quality of Mandarin hotels elsewhere, but I was wrong.

The hotel was adequate, but it's at most a 3.5 star. The room was tired and dated, and could do with a renovation. The bathroom had a musky smell (mostly from the shower curtain), and the tiles are in need of a good grouting. I found dried orange pulp on the duvet cover of my bed - someone has obviously been eating oranges and either the sheet hasn't been washed properly or changed!

I would probably stay elsewhere on my next visit. There are plenty of other hotels in the same price range (including Four Seasons) which might be more worthwhile.
