We chose this hotel because of the attractive rate - we paid only RMB 275 a night and the location is fairly okay. If you purchase a greentree vIP card for a minimal additional price, you get several RMB off of your room rate. If you are staying for more than a few days, it might be worth it to get a card, even if you are only visiting Shanghai once. The hotel is maybe two blocks away from Sogo, the subway stop, and an old temple that is considered a tourist spot also. There is a convenience store (owned by the hotel) and another convenience store across the street.

In terms of the room and amenities, there is little to be expected, especially for the price you're paying. The room size is alright. It has a working table and two chairs and a table on the side. Beds are kind of hard though. No refrigerator, no mini bar, no hair dryer, no safe. They do provide an electric kettle. TV channels are all in Chinese. No English channels or foreign channels at all. Closet space is very small also.

Internet is free in the room. They do provide a internet cable to use in the room. But they also have one computer unit at the lobby, right next to the very small bar. Breakfast is available for additional 15 RMB per person. You can buy your tickets at the front desk. Breakfast is a combination of mostly Chinese congee, noodles, meat buns, and one small egg station. Only one restaurant in the hotel (same as the breakfast area), tried it before, limited food selection - Chinese food only.

Staff can converse in English but have big difficulty.

As it is an inn, there is no concierge to help you with your luggage.

Overall, if you're not too picky, this is an ok hotel.

This review is about the Greentree Inn located on Dapu Road. We stayed here for 3 nights in October 2006.

It is advertised as hotel experience for motel prices. Hence, I expected a hotel - This was not at all a hotel. If you consider this a motel, the quality is acceptable

Cons
-The carpet was very dirty with stains and seeds on it. We thought the seeds were bugs. This shows they do not vacuum the room
-Hallway had wet rags all over. This may be because there is a sauna place on the floor. We stayed on the 4th floor (highest floor possible) by the way
-Our room did not have any windows, but my parents' room did have windows with not so nice views. We could not tell day and night
-TV stations were all in mandarin, even the English programs were dubbed in Mandarin
-I smelled smoke in the room all the time
-The shower facilities were dirty. We wore flip-flops in the room
-Towels did not smell fresh

Pros
-Great prices (about $25 USD per evening for a "deluxe" room)
-They gave free fruits every evening (this explains the unvacuumed seeds on the carpet) and two bottles of water (replenished every day)
-Very strong air conditioning (giant vents)
-Lots of amenities, but low quality (i.e. slippers, combs, vanity kit, toothbrush, shoe cloth, etc)
-There are a lot of restaurants nearby
-There is a 24 hour convenience store right next door
-They have breakfast for $2 USD per day, but we did not try it since there were so many restaurants around.

Note: you must place cards on bed to change sheets. We did not realize this until the last evening
