The Metro/ Subway system in Shanghai is fastest way to travel in the city. The city is well connected via the Metro.

We were in Shanghai to see our Australian Rules Football Team play another AFL team, the Gold Coast Suns. Caught the metro to & from the stadium using a day trip ticket - set price & easy. Wouldn't be bothered trying to get therre in a taxi, especially as when we did try to use to a different destination on another day, the driver tried to cheat us by refusing to turn on the meter & demanding 10x the actual cost on a taxi ride.

Shanghai’s subway system is one of the oldest in China and that is well reflected by the rickety trains still in use today.
My wife and I live in Hangzhou where we can use our phones, Apple Pay, Alipay, wechat pay, unionpay cards to purchase tickets or to access the subway. Shanghai doesn’t have access to any of these features( we asked a subway employee) and we had to search around the Hongqiao train station for an ATM and then go purchase something in order to make smaller change.

This is something that is rather unacceptable and extremely backwards in China.
The carts themselves are ancient, and rather filthy inside.

I've lived in Shanghai for a long time. I've never needed a car because we have 3 of these metro stops near our flat, most within 1 or 2 blocks. Make sure you have a metro card as its the cheapest and easiest way to travel around Shanghai. Make sure you do have a Map.

They offer services in English

The Shanghai subway is an excellent way to move around. It is one of the largest subway networks in the world. It's coverage of all parts of the city is very comprehensive. It is cheap, clean, safe and efficient. The station staff everywhere are very helpful if you require them for any assistance. One of the best subways of the world.
