Set on the edge of the town - a 10 minute walk along a fairly quiet road - this hotel provides a peaceful idyll to enjoy views of the volcano and wildlife. The gardens are beautifully laid out with lush tropical vegetation and flowers. One particular tree is so festooned with iguanas that we named it the iguana tree and the feeders opposite the breakfast area attract all number of bright and colourful native species. A peaceful haven from which to explore the local area.

We arrived during rain, staff had umbrella, but not for us, no help with luggage.

Needed refreshments, they were present, but not available to buy. No service available.

Breakfast was decent, a long wait for eggs. The cook put my eggs on the stove, then spent a long time setting up and cleaning tables as my eggs over cooked.

Very quiet, but far from the city. Lot of birds are fed and active.

Nice pool.

Very average lodges in a lovely setting (great gardens). Pool was small with one sunbed, yes just the one. No evening catering facilities and breakfast was average. Staff did not have a great grasp of English and hence were unable (?) to fix our broken aircon and our trip mates had to move because of a leaking roof. However, convenient as just 5 minutes walk to the town centre.

We enjoyed our three-night stay at Arenal Montechiari! If you're looking for a rustic, beautiful, friendly, quiet, nature-filled place to stay while you enjoy La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano area, this is the place for you. If you're looking for 5-star luxury and nightlife, this isn't the place for you.

The hotel is set just outside the town of La Fortuna. It is within walking distance to town (10 minutes). We walked to town several times during our stay and never used a taxi. We felt safe, even at night.

The grounds around the hotel are absolutely beautifully landscaped. The abundance of trees and flowers are just beautiful. Our daughter took about 50 pictures of the flowers alone! If the day is clear, you will have fantastic line of sight to Arenal Volcano in the distance, which makes for some very pretty photos. The resident cat provides some comic relief as you will find her sleeping everywhere. We only used the pool once, and it was adequate. Pool towels are available at the office.

The cabins are very cute and rustic. Again, rustic was great for our family - it is what we were looking for - but it isn't right for everyone, so do your homework. We were greeted every day with cute towel art accented with flowers. The water pressure was a little weak, but it got the job done. There was plenty of warm water. There was not a hairdryer in our cabin, but I went to the office and the manager gave me one with no problem. The beds are firm and we slept well - it was nice to wake up to the birds chirping. Wi-Fi was available in the public areas (eating area and the office), so you would often find people hanging out in those locations.

Breakfast was available every morning in the open-air (but covered) restaurant near the office. There was a buffet and then an area where you could get fried/scrambled eggs or an omelet. We never went hungry!

The last thing I want to mention is how friendly the staff is! They made sure that we saw there was a sloth in the cecropia tree above the office - otherwise, we would have never known it was there! When the sloth came down from the tree and tried to cross the road, they had to pick it up and put it in a bush beside the office. When we came back from dinner in town, the staff flagged us down as we were walking in to make sure we saw the sloth and were able to take pictures of it. What magnificent creatures! When we needed restaurant recommendations, they were quick to help and provide very good recommendations. They even called and made a reservation for us the first night. Lastly, when our son encountered some gelato that didn't agree with him and was sick on our checkout morning, not only did they allow us to check out late so he could let the illness run its course, they also went out of their way to call a doctor to come to our cabin and examine him! It was very inexpensive and such great service - you can't get doctors to make house calls in the United States! Just incredible. We are extremely grateful.

Room tip: Rustic, quiet and beautiful

We had an amazing time here. Great hospitality and friendly staff. They gave us great tips on booking excursions from hot springs, hanging bridge parks, and water rafting. Located in the heart of La Fortuna. Great restaurants and shopping close by. Beautiful views of Arenal volcano from our room. Adorable bungalows.
