If you are looking of the best of Costa Rica, Playa Conchal certainly fits the bill. But there are times to go to Playa Conchal, and times not to go. Although it is one of the finest beaches in the nation, and a Blue Flag destination, it can be loved to death. For the best experience, don't go on Christmas Week or Semana Santa. Do go at any other time, try to avoid weekends. 4 km long, it is an exquisite beach with crushed shells on the north end transitioning to crystalline white sands mid way, which then give way to pink sands at its southern end. A 4x4 road parallels the beach about 150 m inland, wonderful for shade, flora and fauna viewing. The beach is safe for swimming, and we do a wonderful thing at low tide sunsets called the "washing machine." Let the warm waves roll you back and forth across crushed shells. As you drop over the shelf, bubbles caress you like a jacuzzi, parrots dart by overhead and time slows...

My husband and I had our best typical costa rican lunch on Playa Conchal with Melena (located directely across from the Westin Hotel. She served my husband fresh caught Red Snapper on her portable grill with a chilled Imperial Beer! I had a grilled chicken kabob with a special salsa. Delicious, fresh and served with such love! Melena has a personality that can light you on fire and will dance and entertain you through out your beach bbq! Can't get more authentic than this! Thanks Melena! Sue and Glenn

For our honeymoon we stayed at the Westin...1st day was great, treated with respect everyone spoke pretty good English, was given the "Royal" band and that was supposed to be an upgrade since they didn't have the room that we had booked. Arriving at the condo they placed us in seemed excellent. We were sadly mistaken....by day 2 we were treated as if they didn't want us there and all the sudden barley any of the employees were able to speak any English even ppl at the front desk were acting strange....day3 my husband was recieving severe bug bites on his legs and arms from inside our oh so nice condo....the royal band didn't mean anything anymore....had a reservation at 18:30 with one of the resorts restaurants it called shuttle to pick us up at 18:15 waited outside on the side walk for 1hour and 22mins.......it only got worse from there.....we felt as if we were prisoners on the resort.....others we talked to felt the same way....cost $200 for a car rental on resort off resort we paid $50.....near impossible to call anyone including front desk........and then they tried to make us check out early by sayin they only had us booked til a certain day....when we complained and showed them the itinerary that they themselves had printed off and gave to us they seemed like it was a problem......finally we got a room in the resort in the royal building and yet again our phone in room wouldn't let us call home......on the day we were to leave we ended up missing our flight because we had to dispute charges made to our room that we had never made......tried calling our embassy and they systematically shut off all other accessible phones on the resort since we couldn't get to our room....not that we would of wanted to anyways since they had shut off our AC before we even woke up.....my husband had employees following him and talking back and forth on their talkies informing the front where he was at all times so he couldn't make that call....luckily a guest allowed him to use her skype to make a call and then helped him up front....mean while I was still in the front watching all of the chaos ensue and all of the irritation, anger, and disbelief in their faces.....not to mention their foul language towards me whenever they would walk past me in spanish because my husband had found a way to make a call.....
If you are going to stay there....I would not recommend it AT ALL!!!!!!
We were treated poorly than poor and mistreated beyond belief
Also they only want you to spend money at their resort, use their rentals, their tours, and their taxi service. Plus the cost of their ATM is ridiculous and be sure you know the exchange rate other wise they would screw you as much as possible.....don't use USD
The day after we left the resort my husband miraculously wasn't getting bit by bugs anymore and his legs have cleared up quit a bit

The beach and resort were gorgeous but the infestation of bugs in our rooms and the disrespectfulness of the employees were unexcuseable....I hope to be compinsated in some way shape or form from their blaitant disrespect for us on our HONEYMOON!!!!!!!

Also on another note they go through your rooms while you are not there. We had more than enough items out of place and rummaged through when we would return to the rooms.

Plus wouldn't give us a phonebooks so that we could call out to the world yet alone the local area.

SCAM YOU AS MUCH AS THEY POSSIBLY CAN AND WHEN YOU CATCH ON BE PREPARED TO BE TREATED WITH DISRESPECT FOR BEING INTELLIGENT!!!!!!!!

Sincerely and Truly,
R
