When you come to the coast of any country, you expect and deserve fresh, well prepared seafood. Johann's is spot on. In fact the food and service was so good we ended up eating here three times in one week.
All shell fish and fish are very fresh and always prepared to perfection -- they use a lite mix of local seasonings to grill the tuna and sea bass. Shrimp and squid were prepared in a light butter and garlic and in one iteration, was served over a nice pasta noodle.
Don't expect elegant surroundings because that's not this kind of place. Good mix of locals and tourists and it is simply a very nice, comfortable atmosphere.
Service was attentive but not hovering. It was casual and responsive.
Definitely warrants a visit if you are in the area.

Thank Dave R

Like most restaurants in Puerto Viejo, this place offers local Caribbean food, which means simple fare based on rice and beans and usually fish or chicken. Johanna's is good as long as it isn't too busy, as they can't handle a crowd.

Tiny soda on a side street in Cocles that we visted based upon a local recommendation. We were the only ones there when we visited in the early evening during a week day. We enjoyed the food and the vibe. Not super cheap, but fairly priced relative to the other local options we tried.

Our local neighbors gave us a heads up on this resturant, and thank God! We were so bummed after having a few bad expierences in town. Other places were way over priced and tasteless. No joke, we would go back to Puerto Viejo just to eat here! The garlic steak melted in your mouth. The beans and rice were full of delicious flavor! Coconut and spices oh God my mouth waters thinking of it. Dont waste your time on those show boat tourist resturants in town head down near Cocles and prepare yourself for some good eating!!!!! Loved her staff too! They kept warching us and were very pleased to see our happy food filled faces!

This soda was a pleasant bike ride away from our bungalow, and the food was plentiful and cheap. It all tastes homemade, as if you'd been invited into their house for dinner.
