Really wasn’t expecting much when we walked in off the street. La Criollita has a lcean nice inviting atmosphere with a friendly non-English speaking staff, although we were provided a menu in both Spanish and English

The ceviche was definitely worth trying and the jalapeño beef very tasty. With no complaints the $30 tab was reasonable for what we got.

This place says Bar out front but, as you can see from the pictures, looks more like a restaurant inside, and it is.
This place is perfect for a quick, good, inexpensive meal if you are staying at the Holiday Inn Aurola; it is just around the corner, a four-minute walk. They even have a good enough vegetarian plate. The service is good but they let you linger over your meal for as long as you want; you have to catch them if you want the bill.
They list themselves as open until 4 am, so if you arrive at the Holiday Inn late and hungry, this is your place. There is some confusion about their hours during the week: they close at 4 am on their facebook site but 9 pm on Tripadvisor. Best to call.

We had our best San Jose dinner at this restaurant! The chicken with vegetables was outstanding, accompanied by salad, and choice of rice, fries or mashed potatoes. We were pleasantly surprised by the complimentary soup and fresh bread that arrived ahead of the entree. If you are looking for a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage, try a fruit drink, made with fresh fruit, water and ice ~ whipped up into a frothy delight. They are not overly sweet [I don’t think any sugar is added] and come in a variety of flavors, such as papaya, blackberry or pineapple.

There is also a daily lunch special served Mon-Fri until 3PM which provides an option for a real bargain if it coincides with your desired meal time. Highly recommend!

Downtown San Jose has a lot of dining options in many categories. This place is a rock solid option for fresh ingredients and excellent preparations. Plus the menu is very extensive. The staff speaks good English and is very attentive. You will not leave unsatisfied in body or mind. It is not considered ethnic in any specific category but the variety and consistency make this spot a joy to dine there.
