Let me start by saying I have not yet stayed here but I will as soon as I make it that far south. I booked a hotel on Expedia with a similar name but not in Costa Rica on Expedia’s web site. Expedia booked me at this hotel about 2000 miles or more away…. After I tried checking in where I was actually meaning to stay the clerk told me that Expedia had cancelled my reservation. So I didn’t think anything of it and just booked at the desk. Luckily they had rooms. When I got back from my long weekend, I checked my statement and saw the charge from Expedia and I tried calling them to get it refunded since they cancelled per the lady at the other hotel, I was on hold FOREEVER then I get to speak to someone and they told me they would look into it. (This was about 3 weeks ago) they said they called the hotel and was told no, except the dummies didn’t speak to the correct person or explain the situation very well, just basically a half a$$ job, instead of trying to help me thoroughly… I mean why would I book a hotel in a country I was nowhere near???so I went back to my account with Expedia and wrote a review, the owner of the Hotel San Tomas actually contacted me personally and apologized and said the person Expedia spoke to should have let him make the decisions I refund me and he apologized. The owner of this hotel personally paid me back and invited me to stay when I get down there. This tells me he is an upstanding person who knows service and I’m pretty sure when I do stay there I will experience true service! I also want to say that this hotel only charged me for one night as a no show whereas Expedia kept both nights stay, they do not know the meaning of service and I recommend that nobody uses Expedia. They literally suck and the hold time is 3 hours just to be told they will look into it and call you back in 3-5 business days…
Hotel San Tomas in Costa Rica and Mr Douglass, THANK YOU!!

We stumbled upon this hotel on a more quiet street in San Jose near the gold and Jade museums, yet in a less crowded area. The staff were very friendly and the accommodations very spacious, clean, comfy and quiet... what else can one ask for? Also, the price was very reasonable. The breakfast was hardy and the cook was friendly and took the time to cook us eggs to our liking, vs. just serving us any old type of egg. The building itself is old and beautiful, featuring original floors. We just wished we had had the time to enjoy the beautiful pool, jacuzzi and the gym!

Room tip: Rooms on the "new" or remodeled part are very spacious and get more sunlight

When we travel, we love to stay at bed and breakfasts, converted houses, and historical places. This hotel definitely checked all these boxes. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed, and we created a lasting friendship with the owner. This hotel contains an abundance of rich history, and it is fascinating to imagine the conversations and events that took place here. Of the many places we have stayed at in Costa Rica, Hotel Santo Tomas stood out, due not only to its convenient downtown location, but also to the hospitality of the people at the hotel. Below is a brief review of our time spent here.

We absolutely fell in love with the uniqueness of this converted house to hotel, and are looking foward to staying here again next time we are in San Jose.

And the architectural design was absolutely beautiful.

Hi Manda, The original home was constructed in 1908 and required two years to complete. The original family had 10 children and lived for two years in a hotel close by. Behind the facade is almost 9000 sq. feet in the original home, plus the additions over the past years make it very deceiving from the street. Most people upon entering call it a refuge from the hustle and bustle.

My wife Heidy and I open it 31 years ago. Sad to say we closed it on March 18th, 2020, and have just reopened. We are Covid compliant and are here for our travelers.

Our Anti-Aging Clinic, with Dr. Alan Inman, located here in the hotel performs the covid test. We look so forward to seeing you and your family again.

I truly thank you for such a wonderful review.

Even in Paradise s#£t happens. As we were three weeks into our exciting six-week round trip of Costa Rica we had to return suddenly to San José for urgent eye surgery. We had already had a good experience at the Hotel Santo Tomas at the beginning of our visit and, luckily for us, they had a free room — not a given as it’s a popular place. After the surgery I was instructed to stay put, mostly sitting, for four weeks before being allowed to fly home, so instead of rambling through rain forests, sloth-spotting, basking on beaches or venturing up volcanos we were stuck sitting in the hotel. This is where the owner, Thomas, took pity on us and offered us a deal on his smallest room to help us out in our hour of need. His offer turned the word “generous” into an understatement. He saved our bacon! We will be forever grateful. Thomas obviously has the right feel for choosing his staff as everybody who works there from the guys on reception to the chambermaids and the people making breakfast could not have been more friendly, helpful and concerned. Once you are through the gate, Hotel Santo Tomas is a peaceful oasis in the middle of busy, bustling San José. The house once belonged to a coffee baron and the dark woodwork and colourful floor tiles lend the place a classy and authentic atmosphere. I couldn’t use the well-equipped fitness room but did enjoy the hot tub almost every day. We can’t possibly thank everyone by name but thank you David and Dave and special thanks go to the lovely Omar, philosopher and gentleman who enriched our stay. When in San José, stay at Santo Tomas. Highly recommended!

We found HST after our tour got cancelled and were desperate for last minute accommodations, and HST supplied in full. The rooms were large, spacious, and with a clean/functioning bathroom. There is always someone at the door to assist you with booking tours or suggestions in town. The pool and gym were clean and in good condition. Breakfast is very nice, a local cassadas, and one morning we got to meet Tomas himself just saying hi to multiple guests. 10/10 wound recommend.

Hi Sam, Wow, this posting date was the last day the hotel was open in 2020, we had just completed 30 years in operation Jan. 15th, 2020.

Just reopened after almost 16 months closed and are Covid compliant and it is wonderful to begin having travelers again. The hotel is open 24/7 and we are here to serve. Covid testing is available here in the hotel thru the Anti-Aging Clinic, we have. Performed by Dr. Alan Inman.

What an outstanding review you have posted. Once again I am able to meet our travelers and enjoy a lovely chat.

Again thank you !
