I loved Hotel Aranjuez! Is simple but has a lot of common spaces full of green and birds.
I am going back for the breakfast, is a complete banquet.Sitting having my breakfast in that beautiful patio full of plants was a pleasure I can't forget.
Is a little far from the airport but I recomend that you have the experience of going there.

Dear Olf: Thank you for sharing with us and Trip Advisor users your lodging experience at Hotel Aranjuez. The Hotel Aranjuez premises are conserved as architectural patrimony. In our annex, we offer very modern rooms. In this way, we are looking to satisfy the different needs of our customers. We invite our future customers to request the Reception to show different room options and categories. Our goal is to provide the best lodging option according to our customer’s needs. We thank you for enjoying our breakfast, included in our rate. We hope you repeat your visit to Hotel Aranjuez in the very near future.

We stayed one night in San Jose as we had to catch an early flight the next morning. The staff at the hotel was friendly and attentive. Our safe was locked when we got into the room and someone came immediately to reset it. The remote for the TV was not in the room and it was a bit disappointing to be told "sorry, it's lost"
The hotel is located in an area with not much around. They offer you maps with two walking routes to see the neighborhood and the city. We took the city one and enjoyed it. Wouldn't walk with expensive items on you and/or at night but we had no issues walking to the center, around the buildings/museums and back during the day.
If you are planning to leave early in the morning it would be good to try and get a room on the ground floor. We got one in the new part of the building, first floor, which made our departure very noisy and potentially annoying to other guests.
All in all a good hotel for a short stay/ next-day flight out situation - wouldn't stay here for a long time.

Room Tip: I believe rooms in the old building might have more flair. Avoid the new building if you can.

Dear customer,
Thank you very much for your commentary. We’re glad that you took your time to review our Hotel at Trip Advisor. Around the Hotel, our clients can find a lot of restaurants and sites of interest. In our website, there’s a map with all the attractions located at no more than 5 blocks from Hotel Aranjuez. Patrimony buildings as Calderon Guardia Museum, Santa Teresita Church, La Antigua Aduana, La Casa del Cuño, the National Park, the National Library and the Contemporary Art Musseum are some of those attractions located a few minutes walking from Hotel Aranjuez . We invite our customers to visit he Centro Gastronómico La Luz (a neighbordhood wich provides a lot of entertaiment due the several bars, restaurants and coffee shops). Our staff will always be ready to help you find the best restaurant for you. Once again, thank you for your visit and we hope to have you as our guest in the near future.

Enjoyed a pleasant two night stay at the hotel. It delivered exactly as promised, clean, comfortable and good value for money. The room(s) are very quaint and different in layout due to the nature of the houses being joined together. A buffet breakfast was included in the price and available in the garden area. The front desk is manned 24 hours a day by very friendly and helpful staff. All in all I would recommend staying here. The only downside was some excessive hallway noise by guests leaving early morning and stomping along the hardwood floors. Taxi fare by one of the cooperative cars was a flat rate $25 US. It is an easy15 minute walk to the city centre
I felt safe walking around San Jose during daylight but was strongly advised by locals to take taxis at nighttime. Apparently street crime against tourists is a problem.

Dear Garry: We are happy knowing that you have had a pleasant stay at Hotel Aranjuez. As in any country, taking safety measures is mandatory. For this reason, at night, we recommend our guests to take a taxi on their way back to the Hotel. We much appreciate your commentary at TripAdvisor. ¡Muchas gracias y hasta pronto!

We loved this hotel! Our family of five only stayed one night before our flight out but it felt like home and we would have been keen to stay longer. Ten reasons why we loved it:

1. It represents amazing value, we had a double and a triple (well, quadruple), fully ensuite with nice modern bathrooms, plus the legendary breakfast all for $127!!

2. The legendary breakfast - buffet breakfasts seem rare in Costa Rica, this was the only one we had, and it was a-maz-ing. Loads of different options and all in the beautiful patio garden.

3. The gardens - like a mini jungle, a complete oasis in the city. Beautiful birds and a small squirrel visit and you could curl up in the hammock chair and stay forever.

4. The history - the hotel is composed of five houses built for the well-to-do in the 1930s, so there are high ceilings, wooden floors, tiled floors, long corridors - and the history is all well-explained in a great poster.

5. The location (1) - Aranjuez borders Amon, the former upper class area of San Jose. We only passed through Amon in the taxi on the way to the airport but it looked lovely, by far the most solid and beautiful houses we saw in the city, beautifully renovated for the most part.

6. The location (2) - we discovered too late that the Costa Rica National Museum which is housed in the most amazing former garrison (looks like a huge mustard coloured toy castle) opens at 8.30am - 4.30pm every day except Sunday and Monday and is a 10 minute walk away from the hotel. We only had time to visit the outside, we wished so much we hadn't taken so long packing. Not only is there history but also a butterfly garden. The building is in the final throes of renovation and looks gorgeous.

7. The location (3) - it seems very safe as it is in the University area - the schools of Medicine and Architecture are close by plus a very modern hospital. The colonial government buildings are a short walk away down a pedestrianised boulevard plus an attractive park.

8. Restaurants are all about a ten minute walk away and it seemed quite safe, although we did encounter an aggressive dog but as it is all on a grid system, we just went down the next street. We went to one called the Beer Gallery - randomly with a German theme, but good fun and full of glamourous young Ticos/Ticas out for Friday night.

9. The airport is a 30 minute taxi ride away and the helpful desk guy can arrange a mini-van for $40 if you have a lot of luggage.

10. There is efficient free wifi (yay!)

Room Tip: 29 looked fab - huge bed and very high ceilings, nice old photo art
