When we travel, we look at reviews so I felt the need to leave a review for this place. If you or your family are picky and traveling to San Jose from the US, read this. After staying at this hotel for one night the reviews on this place make no sense to me. It’s not that nice.
Just to level set my expectations - I wince at staying at a Best Western, old Holiday Inn Express or an older hotel in general. I will be comfy at a Marriott, a nice Hilton Garden Inn, etc. An Omni is very nice and then I start getting priced out at a W Hotel or a Four Seasons.
Now that you know that -
I do want to say that the staff was very friendly and breakfast is good. The room was fairly clean. This place was just not my speed. I don’t quite understand all these great reviews. We checked in and showed to the room. I was just so extremely disappointed.
The hotel is near a large park in San Jose, but that’s pretty much it. If you want to walk to get dinner, coffee, etc, it will be at least a half a mile walk. At least. We had to pass a bus stop on our way home from dinner and ended up with a questionable man following us for a little bit. We are in a big city, I get it. But a little creepy.
The rooms are old and small. The furniture was old and worn. The fabric on the furniture looked warn and dirty, though I’m not sure it was.
The bed was flat, springy (not in a good way) and hard. The sheets, while maybe cotton, are not super nice. We had 3 pancake pillows and one hard-as-a-rock pillow. The sheet used on the mattress on our bed was too small to fully tuck into the mattress so every time I rolled over the sheet came with me. And that’s gross because then I’m on the bare mattress. And they give you one flat sheet and an awful blanket to sleep under. That’s it.
The bathroom was clean but really small. No counter space at all. It smelled like sewer gas in the bathroom.
Each room has a window unit and fans. I’m learning that central A/C in Costa Rica isn’t too common, but these wall units were LOUD. It did cool down but everything had to be blasting - the wall a/c unit and the fan. So I was cold while it was all running, then I got hot when the unit turned off.
We didn’t use the kitchenette.
We didn’t swim but it looked nice, I guess. It’s just the courtyard of the hotel with the pool in it.
We booked 4 nights at this hotel. After the first night, I made my husband move to another hotel. I wasn’t comfortable at all. I barely slept from the awful bed and never could get the right temperature in the room. If I had called down to the office we might have been able to “fix” the pillow and sheets situation. I didn’t give them a chance.
My husband tells me that I’m super picky. I don’t know that I’m super picky. I just like nice. This was not nice.
