You will find the tastiest 1-inch thick Chuletón de Ávila here. You will not regret this.
I was on a small road trip with a Spanish friend of mine. We sought Ávila for a half-day road trip. After wondering around the walled city we looked up this place. A small quaint alley which was decorated with an old bicycle and flower pots. We walked up the steep steps on the entrance (which is not really adapted for persons with low mobility and push-chairs). We entered a cosy white room with simple decoration. But don't be put off from this first modest impression. Staff are helpful and attentive. And the food is oh-so-inviting! We shared a Chuletón and a salad and still we struggled with the amount of food we had before us!! We asked for a medium-done steak, but when finding it now done enough (due to the thick piece of meet) the waiter kindly took it to the kitchen and had it done to perfection. No wonder this place makes it to the top 3 in Ávila!

Los Candles is located on the first floor in a quiet lane although there are a couple of tables outside on the street. The food was very tasty and the prices are very reasonable.

Although the waiter spoke no English he was very helpful and extremely patient as we translated the menu. We had a lovely meal, our favourite dishes being the white Beans and Chorizo and the Sweetbreads.
Complimentary liqueurs were a nice touch.

Los Candiles Restaurante is tucked away on a small side street near the Plaza in Ávila, and is well-worth the quest to find...though reservations are recommended.

My Spanish pal and I, visiting Ávila, received word from his gastronomically savvy cousin that this was The Place, but we didn't make reservations and were very fortunate to land a table for two! Everyone who came in after us was turned away, as many of the tables were pre-reserved.

I've been in Spain since June this trip, and have perhaps had beef only one previous occasion, but Ávila is known for its beef, so that's what it would be. I had the Solomillo de Ternera...sort of a filet mignon...though bigger! My buddy had a Chuleta...a kilo of beef which covered a plate. I don't think he stood a chance of consuming the whole thing.

We each started with a bowl of Judias del Barco...a large bean stew with chorizo. It was a surprisingly brisk summer day, and, after the 40 Celsius / 100 Farenheit temps of Madrid, neither of us was dressed for brisk. So a local stew seemed just the thing...and it was! That could have been lunch and dinner right there. But we pressed on, and were richly rewarded. I don't think I ate anything much for 48 hours thereafter.

We shared a bottle of a nice Ávila red wine (the house gave us perfect counsel) and followed the enormous meal with a traditional Ávila dessert...Yermas de Santa Teresa...egg yolks made not-too-sweet and served in paper ramikans.

This is the place for eating in Ávila, if you can find it...and if you have a reservation! 920.213.102 (Calle Pedro Lagasca, 5, 05001 Ávila)

Interior of the place isn't great and the service so-so (we reserved the table and only had till 16:00, the waiter was stressed about whether we would be gone in time). We share among friends several dishes.Next to sepia and the Milhoja de Morcilla (some type of black pudding) especially the Chuleton is amazing. The portion is HUGE and although we saw many eating a portion alone it can be advised to share: many others took a doggy bag. I shared the piece with a friend after some shared starters. We really can eat a lot but sharing the piece was the best thing ever. I believe the piece served was around 750 gram! But more importantly is was of great quality. And that only for €16,50 (or a different part for €26).

We had the best steak ever! It was delicious and huuuuge. Maybe not the fanciest and modern restaurant around but very authentic and with excellent food and friendly staff (they don't speak English but they did the best to understand what we want).
