The view from the deck is magnificent. One could sit on the deck and look at the sea below, listen to the waves crashing against the rocks and drink a glass of wine from their excellent range on their wine list.
We visited the restaurant for dinner and had drinks on the deck before our meal. If it wasn't for the wind and the fact that it was getting cold as the sun set, I would have preferred to have my dinner jut there!
Their food is delicious. The Maple syrup lamb-shank was melt-in-the mouth soft, and the mussles Moule Mariniere was just-picked fresh.
The service is outstanding, and the staff perfectly trained.

I was in this hotel six years ago and it was one of the finest in Plettenberg. That's why we came back. Everything was as it was then - only six years older and never maintained. It seems that nobody cares about the hotel and nobody is responsible for maintenance. Here a few highlights:

* Some rooms have no working keycard lock anymore. If the door is closed you need to go to reception to have it opened. If the staff is busy they just give you the master key. Somebody forgot the master key inside the room and I saw the staff and entering from outside by ladder!
* The spa looks deserted, slimy green water in the wirlpool, broken windows etc.
* Of the two bathroom sinks had no cold water.
* Sometime they made up the beds, sometimes not.

However, the staff is friendly, trying to avoid looking desperate and the breakfast buffet, while tiny, is of good quality.

I was booked to stay with my partner at the Plettenberg Park Hotel & Spa for three nights earlier this year.

Absolutely everything about our stay was a real disappointment - the room, the food, the spa, the service, everything.

But the real lowlight was being woken up by A RAT in our bedroom in the wee small hours of the morning. (The rat, for the avoidance of doubt, had found its way into the cupboard with the TV and the refreshments, and was helping itself to the coffee capsules. I later discovered there was a rat catcher behind my bed, so clearly this was not a one-off incident.)

We had no hesitation in checking out a day early and, while I was pleased not to be charged for that third and final night which we (obviously) chose to spend in another hotel, I remain shocked that no-one from the hotel has contacted me subsequently to apologise formally. In hindsight, I’m also amazed that I was charged for the night when we were woken up by the rat – a night, suffice it to say, when we got almost no sleep.

Every hotel we stayed in during our three weeks in South Africa was fantastic. Apart from the Plettenberg Park Hotel & Spa, which is about as far from being a five star hotel as it’s possible to imagine. It claims to be “exclusive and unique” – for rat lovers, maybe; for everyone else, I’d urge you to stay well clear of the place.

Good day,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay. It is through constructive feedback like yours we are able improve.

Plettenberg Park Hotel and Spa is located on a cliff over-looking the sea and is built within a 150 hectar ecco-nature reserve
and occasionally spiders, and field mice do venture into guest areas. The severe drought conditions the country is experiencing has also caused the field mice to seek food out of their natural habitat , we are proactively taking preventative measures by placing traps around the hotel whilst we are experiencing this abnormal animal behavior, which we remove before guests check in.

We apologize for any inconvenience and more so that nobody contracted you directly after your stay with us, this is not indicative of our service standards.

Out of the way and all the better for that. We visited for lunch with a couple of friends and were struck by the obvious quality and serenity andvspectacular location. The lunch menu was an interesting mixture of light offerings, very reasonably priced and served on quality crockery and cutlery. This would be an ideal location for a special occasion.

Room Tip: Lunch provides an ideal opportunity to indulge without breaking the bank!

This 5 star rated hotel has some of the most spectacular views. It alone would make the stay worthwhile. Whether from the breakfast area, terrace or spa the view is there. Enjoy walks in the lush green surrounds
