I often travel to Bloemfontein on business and whilst I rate the rooms as good (they are clean and have the basic necessities), I rate the hospitality of the staff as excellent. They are extremely friendly and accommodating on all accounts. A real treat is the dinners that Rassie (spelling?) prepares, which after a long day is so welcome instead of trapsing around town looking. And breakfasts with a homemade touch. When leaving early, I even get a morning breakfast pack, to get me through the day.
The rooms may not be the fanciest but the warmth of the staff truly makes up for it.

Having booked an overnight stay through a reputable internet booking site and having received a confirmation, we encountered a locked door on arrival. After ringing the doorbell more than once, a young lady eventually opened the door and peeped sleepily at us through the security gate. She asked what we wanted and when we told her we booked, she said that she did not know of any booking. Giving the name and confirming that the booking was made through an internet booking site did not elicit any other response than a shrug. She did eventually say that we can check in as they had vacancies but the first impression was so bad that we declined and celebrated our lucky escape. Down the road, at the Bali Boutique Hotel, we were welcomed and had a most pleasant stay at a mere R90 more than what we would have had to pay for clearly inferior accommodation at Alchemy Guesthouse. To be avoided like the plague!

I booked executive and received the honey moon suite.
Very friendly staff, I expected more from the rooms for the standards and the ranking on Tripadvisor. The building style is bad and my toilette seat was broken. Bed was good. The shower has the size of an extra room , but no pipe pressure!
The view from the so called "honey moon " suite is not nice, rubble and roofs...
Their is room for improvement .....
All in all not bad, but over rated.....

The Alchemy is fantastic. Extremely friendly staff who made us feel very welcome.
Rooms were very spacious, had nice bathrooms, TV and desk for working.
The daily breakfast was awesome, plenty of options, so filling and great preparation for a big day. The only very minor difficulty we had was getting some washing done in a limited time. Not a problem unless it's urgent as it can still be arranged on the premises via an overnight service.
The Alchemy was the first place I ever stayed in South Africa, the perfect introduction to how friendly the people are that live there.
Very highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 3, next to the reception office, has the bigger bath ;)
