We went to The Grazing Room last night (4 adults) after having booked the day before.
The restaurant is the "little sister" to DW11 which is next door. They serve gourmet tapas and are much more casual than their fine dining sibling.
The restaurant itself is very small. There are probably only 4 or 5 tables and one long common table in the centre.
The waiters were all very attentive and friendly.
The food itself is very good - we ordered 8 plates between the 4 of us and then had 2 desserts. We were STUFFED by the time we left.
The food is simple but very tasty and is well presented. The teeny kitchen is in the restaurant and is in plain sight of the patrons so you watch them prepare your meals.
The wine menu is fairly large and the wine, while not being cheap is not much worse than other restaurant prices. (We paid R280 for a bottle of Waterford Sav Blanc)
Despite all these positive comments, there was just something lacking. The ambiance was non-existant. We were one of two tables in the room and there was no music, no character and the place felt sterile.
The ambiance of a place is not usually something that phases me, but it was really clinical here. I almost feel that it was a bit canteen-esque. Whatever it was, it didn't do it for me at all.
Our bill for 4 people with alcohol came to R2800.00 - it's not going to break the bank but it isn't a cheap night out in the least. I can think of 5 other places where I would spend the same money that have as good if not better food and the ambiance is just....well, there is an ambiance to talk of - be it bustling, romantic or otherwise.
I would go back to The Grazing Room, but certainly not in a hurry and I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.
