The food is freshly prepared in front of you, service is professional, the wine selection is great, and they have the most exquisite Tom Yum crispy squid. Arrive hungry, as you will want to try everything on the menu!
I loved the ambience and cuisine here. Its a place to splash out and also for romantic tete-a-tetes. A must visit for foodies in Johannesburg
We visited The Grazing Room for dinner with friends and was disappointed. The food is average and nothing stands out.
It is slated as a tapas restaurant, but this is confusing. The dishes are expensive for what you get and also vary a lot in size. Some tapas sized portions and some much larger.
The service wasn't good and the ambiance is very cold. Some of the leather seats were cracked which pinches your leg. The only highlight of the evening was the Argentinian Malbec.
DW next door is great, the grazing room isn't. Won't return.
The Grazing Room's haute cuisine sister restaurant DW 11-13 is hands-down one of our favourites in Joburg. It was therefore crucial that we try the more casual Grazing Room too see if it would also make our list of favourite restaurants. First, it is much easier to secure a booking that the Grazing Room than it is at DW 11-13. It is smaller with 4 small tables and a large 8-10 seater in the centre of the room. The kitchen consists of a tiny cooking and food preparation area within full view of diners which adds some interest to the room. Aside from that though, the room is pretty stark and cold, with minimal décor touches to make it feel warm and welcoming. The lighting is dim, with lots of cool metal finishes. The ambience of the restaurant does not make you feel like lingering over your meal. That only comes after you try your first little plate of food.
The menu is short, and to the point. There are a range of 'starter' type options, mini 'mains', and a small handful of dessert plates. We opted to try a few from each category and were in food heaven for most of our meal. After an average crispy fried calamari and squid ink dipping sauce, each plate was more delicious than the one before. Of note were the ham and cheese spring rolls, hammed duck wraps, and prawn ragu. The plates were not as tiny as expected and each one contains enough to stretch to two people. They also catered for vegetarians which was good too see. The food was moreish and delicious, and it was great to be able to eat at our own pace, and not order everything at one go.
We were uncertain of how the ordering system worked (order all the plates at once, or to order one or two at a time)or even whether a portion could feed 2 people, etc. This is something that we would have loved our waiter to explain when they provided us with the menu. Service was very slow to begin with and we weren't always sure which of the staff was allocated to our table. We waited a really long time for our drinks and first food order. Once our first plate arrived, the pace of service improved and the waiters were also able to be more attentive.
The Grazing Room is ideal if you are keen to try little plates of deliciousness. Don't expect a fancy decked out restaurant or waiters fawning over you. It's minimalist in style and ambiance, but definitely delivers on taste.
