Owner description: The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.

I'd suggest this is an important place to visit if you want to better understand SA's history. The carved friezes tell the story of the Voortrekkers and various interpretation boards add context and explanation. There is a museum of artefacts in the basement. As you'd expect for a monument of national importance, it's well-managed, with all the ancillary facilities you'd expect like car parking, toilets, cafe and gift shop.

What a shock after our last visit in 1990 when it was clean and neat and well kept, to seeing it now with our friends from the UK as a South African I felt so let down by the people that are ment to look after our old buildings and our history but I guess this does not matter the them.
What could have been a lovely visit turned out to be a sad day, our friends work for one of the top newspapers in London, they did say that they would do a write up on there tour to South Africa.

If you love history, this is the place to visit. It tells you the history of the Voortrekkers (Afrikaans/Dutch pioneers) who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1838 because they did not want to be under British rule anymore. The move was in land to what use to be Natal and Transvaal. The building itself is impressive and was designed by Gehard Moerdijk, it was inaugurated in 1949
The monument has got the longest marble frieze in the world, showing parts of the history. The cenotaph is the center of the Museum, on 16 December the sun , at 12h00 shines directly on it. One 16 December 1838 was the Battle of Blood River.
There are a lot of historically artifacts in the lower section
The rest of the area is also worth a visit.
