Owner description: The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve. It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. Today it is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country.

We found the visit to be enlightening. The history of South Africa is filled with conundrums and this only served to enforce that. The people who settled the area were hardy, but their treatment of and beliefs about the indigenous people is truly troubling. Worth a visit, but be prepared for some hard truths.

A great display of our country's history. Do climb out the stairs to the top of the monument. Amazing views, the smell of the bushveld... Horse-riding also offered on the premises - horses are well-mannered and of good nature. Have been riding here since the age of 5.
Kiosk offers food and drinks - situated at the monument.

Perfect hills for cycling or running training. It’s a safe environment. Just arrive with your bikes (Mtb or road), or running shoes. Pay at the gate, enter, park and enjoy your training. It’s safe, secure and has great hills for training.

I'd suggest this is an important place to visit if you want to better understand SA's history. The carved friezes tell the story of the Voortrekkers and various interpretation boards add context and explanation. There is a museum of artefacts in the basement. As you'd expect for a monument of national importance, it's well-managed, with all the ancillary facilities you'd expect like car parking, toilets, cafe and gift shop.

What a shock after our last visit in 1990 when it was clean and neat and well kept, to seeing it now with our friends from the UK as a South African I felt so let down by the people that are ment to look after our old buildings and our history but I guess this does not matter the them.
What could have been a lovely visit turned out to be a sad day, our friends work for one of the top newspapers in London, they did say that they would do a write up on there tour to South Africa.
