I have just returned to Australia after spending 16 nights at 4 on Varneys. I was in the city for work and study purposes, with a bit of sightseeing thrown in. It couldn't have been a better location. My room was simply lovely, I had a desk with good light for work sessions, and the room itself was elegantly decorated with high ceilings and two glorious big old windows that I could adjust to keep my room temperature just right - no need to bother with the air-conditioner. Phillip, Thierry and Emlyn were excellent hosts - forever helpful, with great restaurant and sight-seeing advice. Phillip was quite correct - we should have skipped the poor old animal and bird park (part of the hop-on, hop-off red tour bus itinerary) which was, as he warned, depressing. Breakfasts were provided and served the purpose well. On my last morning, after being thwarted yet again by the wind to get up Table Mountain, dear Thierry took me in his little black jeep up to Signal Hill to see Cape Town in all its 360 degree glory. It was such a perfect way to complete my visit.

Room Tip: My first room was in the attic - a bit dark so they swapped me to a lovely room on the first floor.

I stayed at 4 on Varneys for a week in October/November 2014. The accommodation was very clean and the caretakers were ALWAYS helpful. Within walking distance to the V&A Waterfront (safe walk night and day) and in close proximity to lots of restaurants, bars, supermarkets, pharmacies, etc. The property had good security. The WiFi worked well.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room!

We stayed at Varneys for a total of thirteen days in September. We were planning to stay at Varneys for five days, go on safari and then had reservations to stay at a different hotel for eight more days when we returned to Capetown. We enjoyed our five day stay at Varneys so much that when returned we cancelled our original reservation at the other hotel and stayed at Varneys for the remainder of our trip. It is a lovely and comfortable guest house on a quiet street and very convenient for getting to the V&A Waterfront, the City Bowl and other places in town. There are a number of really good restaurants within walking distance which we enjoyed. Our rooms were nicely finished and had very comfortable beds. Best of all, the owners Thierry and Phillip were truly delightful hosts. The concierge, Emlin, was available 24 hours a day. They made us feel at home and took care of our every need from calling cabs to making reservations and sharing important information about Capetown attractions. They made sure we had everything we needed and were invaluable in helping us make plans. If we return to Capetown we will definitely stay at Varneys again.

We really enjoyed our stay, the staff were great there was a homely atmosphere.Nothing was too much trouble for Terry or Philip. The linen was luxurious and the breakfast was to die for. We will be heading back to Cape town just as soon as I can.

We stayed here for a couple of days because we attended a function at Green Point Stadium. We were nicely welcomed and shown around when we arrived. The rooms were comfortable and I was very impressed by the extra effort that goes into making a person feel at home. The area is surprisingly not noisy at all and the guest house was private even though there were quite a few people. The manager and owners always made sure we were happy and they serve a really nice continental breakfast each morning. It's central and in easy walking distance to the shops and restaurants in the vicinity. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

Room Tip: Specify if you want a bath because not all rooms have one. The rooms on the second floor is quite nice with easy access to the balcony although the third floor is more private.
