We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this beautiful location. We felt we'd had quite an adventure starting with great fun crossing the estuary, pulling ourselves along ropes attached to the small boat moored at the riverside (pontoon closed)- life jackets were provided!, walked over the sandy hills with great views and finally after a picnic back along a deserted beach to the boat crossing. (Group of friends age 60+ moderate fitness)

Goukamma Nature & Marine Protected Area, Western Cape

One of the nature reserves run by Cape Nature, Goukamma is just south of the N2, between Sedgefield and Knysna. Close to the main entrance and office, there are the three Buffalo Valley chalets : two-bedroom, well equipped, self catering chalets, Vlei, Forest and River Lodge. Closer to the entrance (and road to the small town of Buffalo Bay) is another larger chalet with views of both river estuary and ocean. River Lodge is a very pleasant and well maintained base for exploring the walking trails of this reserve of sea coast, sand dunes, woodland, and a large fresh water lake, the Groenvlei, which also has another splendidly located chalet, Mvubu Lodge, on its southern shore and accessed by another road close to Sedgefield. Several of the trails start on the other side of the Goukamma River, after pulling yourself across on the rope ferry boat.
River Lodge is well located with wonderful views of the river and the sounds of occasional Fish Eagles and the thundering of the Indian Ocean surf on the other side of the dunes. Electric light and phone charging comes from its own small bank of solar panels & the hot water geyser, fridge and the cooker run on cylinder gas. The toasting skillet for the gas ring was especially appreciated! The shower produces bursts of hot water, the kitchen sink and wash basins seem to be better blessed - small complaints for the peace and seclusion provided.

This is a must if you like peace and tranquility. We stayed at Fish Eagle loft in the Goukamma Nature Reserve. This overlooks the river to where it meets the sea.
We virtually had the game reserve to ourselves apart from the birds and tortoise. There are marked walks within the park. You have to get the quirky boat across the river to the start of them. We did part of the bush pig walk up along the ridge with fantastic views of the river, river mouth and sea. We chose to walk back along the extensive beach. On the whole walk we only passed a family walking on the beach.

The standard of the cottages here is great. The one we stayed in had two double rooms, and open plan lounge with a small kitchen area, and a great barbeque area outside overlooking the lagoon and the beach in the distance. At dusk you see the most amazing sunsets from the barbeque area, while relaxing on the provided camping chairs around the fire. Wonderful peaceful setting and a close-to-nature feeling one cant get from a holiday home in Buffels Bay. We will be back.

An incredibly beautiful place. The beach is kind of windy, but the water is as blue as the sky and it is a lovely place to take a stroll by the beach or in the forest
