We were so happy that we decided to stay here rather than in Dominical. Just a no frills beautiful place. Sabina was a great host. Easy to talk to and very informative. The only thing is that we would have liked a little more options for breakfast, her fruit and jams were delicious but we got overloaded on fruit. I would highly recommend staying here if you are in the area.

We stayed at this peaceful hillside retreat for 8 nights and it was a pleasant, relaxing stay. The description and pictures of the property provided on its website are current and accurate. This property, known as Alma de Hatillo, is located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, just north of the surfing town of Dominical and at the south end of the village of Hatillo - at the very edge of the rainforest.
For the first night, due to overbooking, Sabina, our host who speaks Polish, English and Spanish, made us feel at home in her own house located on the top of the hill within this retreat. Sabina was helpful in planning our trip beforehand, during our stay, and even after we left and realized that we left an item behind - her son, David, drove to meet us half way to Santa Ana and deliver the item we left behind.
Our cabin in the midst of tropical plants, was in a secluded area just above this lovely, hillside swimming pool facing the Pacific Ocean and providing magnificent sunset views. The room was spacious and quiet. Both room and bathroom were simple but were maintained neat and clean. Included were basic toiletries, laundry service and secure parking within the fenced property. We had an issue with the showerhead and it was promptly fixed.
The highlight of this retreat is the buffet style breakfast which is served on an open air breakfast/dining deck protruding into lush rainforest, where the trees are right next to you and you can see and hear some of the forest’s exotic inhabitants. Each morning we were treated to a continental breakfast which included toasted bread, Costa Rican coffee and tea. It also included fresh fruit, Sabina’s delicious chocolate spread from cocoa, fruit jams, fresh-squeezed juices from a variety of tropical fruits, and an arrangement of freshly cut flowers on each table – almost all harvested on the property. Dinners are also available if specially ordered first thing in the morning.
Within 5 minutes’ drive, at the Hacienda Baru, we took the “Flight of the Toucan” rainforest zip-line tour, which was a spectacular adventure and a great way to see and learn about the tropical rainforest and have fun at the same time. Also, within 10 minutes’ drive, we enjoyed this breathtaking 10 km-long smooth sandy beach, stretched between the jungle and the ocean often without a soul in sight. The various, colorful iguanas we met on the way, are fun to watch.
Thank you to Sabina and her team of local helpers. The cost was very reasonable. Would definitely return and recommend with confidence. February-14, Alena and George, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Room Tip: Individual cabine above the pool is private, quiet, and has a nice view.

We spent two nights at Albergue Alma de Hatillo. The grounds are beautiful, the pool is clean, the rooms were comfortable and cozy and the hostess was gracious and lovely. I liked that there was a big gate in front and that the grounds were very secure. The owner grows and makes all the food she serves at breakfast. She gave us a tour of the property and explained a lot about the plants and wildlife. I liked the personal attention at this property. It was almost like a home stay.

We stayed one night. I had been in touch with Sabina and decided not to make a reservation since our plans were not set. Then as we came into the area, we decided to call her and she met us at the gate and showed us to a room.

My initial impression of Sabina by email was very good, and she did not disappoint in person. Sabina was very friendly and warm.

The room itself was okay. There was no air conditioning, and there was a fan. We got there in the late afternoon, and there was the loud sound of crickets. It seemed buggy and my wife put on insect repellent.

We went into the pool and had a nice relaxing soak. The pool was small and very refreshing.

For dinner we walked to the local Soda just down the street, based on Sabina's recommendation. It was a local place, good food and very reasonably priced.

That night, we went to sleep early. It was not quiet. The sound of a dog barking went on for quite a while. There was also the noise from the road. Finally we fell asleep.

In the morning, we went to try out Sabina's famed jams. They were quite good. If only Sabina had contracted with a local bakery, like the one just up the road from her, we could have had good bread. Instead we had the boring processed bread found in super markets.

The coffee was good, the jam was good, the bread was not. Then we had questions about directions to San Jose, and Sabina came over and told us the best route.

I gave this place 4 stars because Sabina is so friendly, and really, for the area and based on the lower price compared to other hotels, this is a pretty good deal.

Sabina owns this special B&B and takes a lot of pride in her accomplishment. She serves a wonderful organic breakfast, with all ingredients from her property.
The salt water pool is really a bonus here. With the lovely new deck, you could spend hours soaking in the pool and listening to all the birds calling.
The B&B is gated and therefore you can feel very safe staying there.
Sabina doesn't serve a regular dinner meal, but always has alternative suggestions.
