We stayed for 3 nights at Hacienda Baru, in a lovely cabin, with gorgeous planting outside. (There are plenty of orchids and tropical plantings in the main grounds).
The cabin had two bedrooms, a shower room and a living area with a small kitchen containing a fridge and a coffee maker. Our beds were made up every day and the cabin cleaned. We also arrived early and they let us straight in.
We used mosquito nets throughout our stay as this is the tropics - there are bound to be flying things!
The trails are amazing and we saw so much: Capuchins, Coati Mundi, Peccaries, Agouti, so many birds including Aracari's and Toucans. But the absolute best were the three toed sloths - one treated us to a rare view of it leaving the tree for a comfort break, almost as though it wanted us to watch its back - what a privilege.
The breakfasts are good and we also ate there for evening meals - we did try to drive out one night to Dominical for food - goodness it is seriously expensive down there!
The swimming pool is lovely and you can see the Aracaris from it.
The gift shop is also reasonably priced and we got our best souvenirs here - we only saw the beautiful decorated wooden spoons here.
We would definitely return here - it is wonderful. A treat!

Room Tip: We chose the two bedroom detached cabins which had everything we needed.

We began with a very informative hike to the actual zip line, stopping to view sloths, monkeys and birds through the spotting scope. The guides are really good at finding the wildlife hidden in the trees! Juan Carlos explains the natural history well and is obviously very proud of his country, as he should be - it's beautiful. When we reached the top we had a safe spot to lock up the backpacks and began to zip the 8 lines. Lots of fun! After the zip we hiked back down and had lunch and a cold beer at the restaurant - try the casado, excellent!! i would highly recommend this tour.

Dear yogiglo,

Thank you for your review here on Trip Advisor. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time on our Zip line tour with Juan Carlos and the lunch.

zip-lining is always a very special experience and we are proud, that we can offer it to children of the age of 3 as well as to seniors. We are thrilled that you enjoyed our mixture of adventure and education.

Maybe next time you will be able to do the Monkey Challenge!

Thank you,

We had a house with kitchen, separate bedrooms, a screened porch, private bathroom. Pleasant self guided walks although we saw mostly leaf-cutter ants. However, while we were there, we saw and heard toucans, coatis and an agouti on the hotel grounds. Very nice pool. We did the hike and overnight stay in the jungle with a very knowledgeable guide, Pedro, who had an amazing telescope and a very sharp eye and ear. We saw many birds which would have eluded us without his guidance. it rained very hard during the hike and Pedro was very solicitous of our safety. After the rainy night, we saw a sloth sunning himself and drying out at the top of a tree bare of leaves!

Room Tip: We liked the privacy of the house-like units. There were also pool-side units which I think might have been noisier.

We arrived at Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge and Lodge around 9:30 PM after a long ride down from San Jose C.R.. We were greeted by Jack and his staff very warmly. They made sure we were fully informed of their services and told us to let them know what we needed. We had flown down from San Jose, California for some bird watching excursions and time to relax in the tropics.
We had a number of trips planned by Jack on the premises and they were all informative and the guide was knowledgeable and helpful for all 3 tours. Jack help us plan a trip outside of the refuge as well and he hook us up with a marvelous tour guide from Santa Elena named Susana. This was all during the week between Christmas and right after New Year. All of our needs were met or exceeded. The food on the premises was delicious and fresh. We recommend the Cosado! It is the national dish of Costa Rica. the accommodations included breakfast and they even help breakfast for us during our trips. For our excursion away, they made us bag breakfasts for the road! The lunches and dinners are reasonably priced and there are nice restaurants in Domincal and in Palmar Norte and Sur.
The amount of wildlife on the refuge is amazing. Parrots, sloths, monkeys, caimen, coati, peccary, birds galore, and more. Everyday was an adventure, plus the rooms are very comfortable and there is a warm ozone pool for your pleasure. Don't hesitate. It was affordable and fun. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Fans in rooms, comfortable beds, roomy, some small houses on the property. Parking available near rooms, close to the beach.

A superb beach, all yours.
Do I need to go on.?
And, when you wash a few clothes out there are discreet lines to dry then on.
