This is a wonderful small occupancy boutique resort. We stayed for 4 nights, 3 days. The hotel helped us from the planning stages. They helped book our national flight from San Jose to Drake Bay on Sansa (they even helped rebook the national flights after American Airlines changed our international flights), scheduled the taxi to the beach, and boat to the hotel. We were greeted with a smile and a welcome drink as we checked in. Nancy walked us through the schedule for our activities that we planned while the porters took our luggage up the 76 stairs to our room. Lunch and dinner are planned at the previous meal where you have usually 3 different options, all wonderful and made with local products.  Meals are held in a great outdoor room where you are encouraged to mix with other guests and overlook the bay while looking at different wildlife and beautifully manicured gardens from your seat. Our room was lovely with a spectacular view where we saw many different species of birds right from the hammock (room 12). Capuchin monkeys ran across the roof in the morning providing a natural wake up call around dawn. We did two tours; a snorkeling trip around Caño Island and a great hike through Corcovado. We also did an afternoon bird watching tour and a night tour. The staff was extremely friendly and very helpful.  I had dropped $60 while starting a hike and when we came back they figured out it was mine. Some things to note is that there are a lot of stairs to get to your room. All the windows in the rooms are just screens and you only have fans to keep you cool, it was fine for us. I think air conditioning would change the feel of the place and ruin the peaceful sounds of the jungle.

Room tip: There are many steps so be prepared. There is no air conditioning but good fans in the room.

We are in the junior suite and there is construction next door. Pounding on metal starting at 7 am for two days. We are currently staying here if anybody has any questions glad to help.

Pros: Beautiful grounds. Super awesome employees. Food is good. Hit and miss probably depending on tastebuds. Room is super clean and very big.

Cons: Junior Suite is advertised with a view. There is a small view if you are standing up looking through some trees. If you are sitting down there is no view and pretty much solid foliage. The Junior Suite and the Penthouse Suite are up high with lots of stairs. Also, seems to be less wild life but it could be the constant pounding and sawing next door.

Most of the wild life seems to be centered around the main dining area.

Beautiful setting and would be a nice place to just relax but construction has very much effective our vacation.

Room tip: Lots of stairs so ask if that is a problem. Cheaper rooms have better view than Junior Suite and are very nice.

We just returned from an excellent 5 night stay in the JR Suite and additionally my mother-in-law stayed in a Deluxe room. The grounds are absolutely stunning with picturesque views in every direction. There are beautiful tropical plants, trees, and flowers to admire at every turn as you walk on the paved pathways to/from your room to the main dining area or dock. The landscaping is gorgeous! We arrived via Sansa to Drake Bay airstrip and were picked up by the hotel and driven to the beach where we boarded a boat for the quick ride to Águila’s main dock. We were greeted by an American Crocodile sunning himself along the riverbank at low tide. Upon arrival, we along with the other groups of guests checking in, were given a welcome drink and seated at a table in the open air dining room for a “group style” orientation with Rebecca which was very impersonal because we were not traveling with any of the other guests in the group. I also thought it was inappropriate to discuss our private food requests in front of other guests. This is one thing I recommend they should do differently moving forward. It greatly took away from our initial arrival impression. I would have much preferred an individual orientation and check in just for my family for a more intimate and personalized customer service experience. That being said, the property is AMAZING and we loved the JR Suite. My Mother in law’s Deluxe room was very nice too. Every meal was delicious and the portions are very generous, almost too much food! We loved the typical Costa Rican style breakfast and typical Casado lunches and all of the fresh fish options at dinner. The chef is truly exceptional and we repeatedly commented amongst ourselves how good the food was. We have traveled all over and stayed in very high end resorts and the Aguila de Osa chef can compete with the best of the best! The waiters, Mimi, Rudi, and Enrique all provided stellar service and we enjoyed their company during our stay. Nancy is a STAND OUT employee who should be in top management! She is incredible and she exudes kindness, enthusiasm, knowledge and confidence that sets her apart. Her attitude is above and beyond and we enjoyed every interaction with her. We saw Scarlett Macaws each day and a highlight for us was the daily morning and afternoon visits in front of our room porch by the White Faced Capuchin monkeys! It was such a pleasure to observe them up close, jumping from roof to tree and drinking the water from the pink flowers in the tree by our porch! Incredible! We adored the beauty of the tropical wood used in the interior construction of the JR Suite and it’s 18’ tall ceilings designed to capture the ocean breezes. The room was always comfortable and cool. The housekeepers did an amazing job keeping everything clean and we had no issues with our room and never had any critters get inside the room (something I worried about beforehand). Tony, our guide on the La Sirena Station Corcovado trip was exceptional as well. Because of his skill we were able to see Squirrel monkeys, Spider monkeys, Tapirs, Peccary, Coati Mundi, Caimans, Crocodiles, countless exotic birds, and even whales tails coming out of the water on the boat ride! On a scale of 1 to 5 I give 10 stars for Tony, Nancy, the waitstaff & kitchen staff and the boat captains - THANK YOU so much! You are awesome! Adrian took us by boat one morning to beautiful San Josecito beach and I definitely recommend that. One thing I’d like to mention to future travelers, my husband and I both got pretty sick from drinking the tap water after the first day there despite the lodge having a good filtration system. We are now both on antibiotics to clear up giardia which is not a big deal but definitely an inconvenience. We do not like to buy bottled water because of the plastic but you may want to buy purified water at the Drake Bay grocery store as a precaution if this is of concern to you. All in all, I highly recommend booking a trip to Aguila de Osa! You won’t regret it!

Room tip: Book the JR Suite it’s worth it for the monkey viewing

The minute the boat turned from the ocean up the river to Aguila de Osa’s dock, surrounded by jungle, and our host Nancy came down to welcome us, I felt at home, that this was a special place. I had flown from San Jose to Drake Bay in an 11 passenger plane. Before I was out of the tiny airport, my luggage had been put in the back of an extended cab pickup truck and I was told to get in, along with the other passengers from our flight. We were driven about 45 minutes through farm land, jungle and through a few small rivers to the beach where a boat was waiting in the surf. In the time it took me to take my shoes off and roll up my pants to wade onto the boat, my luggage was loaded and we were off. Five minutes later we arrived at the dock.

Nancy did an amazing job welcoming me, explaining what to expect in terms of meals and schedule, and asking in great detail about dietary needs. She radiated warmth, kindness and care. I was in a difficult place in my life and she somehow sensed that and went out of her way to care for me, while respecting my privacy. Her kindness was healing. Her wisdom and perspective set the tone for me to transition back to joy.

The location is absolutely amazing. To be in the jungle with capuchin monkeys running around, iguanas mating in the trees, Jesus Christ lizards with their Ministry of Silly Walks run, scarlet macaws eating in the almond trees…it’s an experience of a lifetime. The rooms are very comfortable, they all have views and outdoor seating and, although it was hot and rained a lot, I was very comfortable with just the ceiling fan. The food was delicious and happy hour at 6 was a great time to meet other guests and share adventure stories from the day.

The staff at Aguila de Osa are truly extraordinary. They are all very professional and efficient and at the same time, their work comes from their hearts. They all care very much that guests are happy and will joyfully do anything they can to help. Rudy, Enrique and Mini serve meals and run the bar delightfully. Nancy, Rebecca and Christina run the place impeccably- every detail is attended to and every interaction feels so attentive, like you are the only person in the world at that moment. They were very kind as I decided to extend my stay several days. They went above and beyond to help me, even booking me a room at a neighboring property the one night they were sold out. They model excellent management all while having fun, laughing and loving their work. I had a few heart-to-hearts with Rebecca and I can tell you, she is a wise, compassionate person. I had such an amazing time, I couldn’t bear to leave without planning a time to come back next Spring.

Room tip: Bugs were not an issue but I mistakenly left some chocolates in my suitcase, which those tiny nasty-biting ants found- just use the fridge.

We were attracted to Aguila de Osa by the amazing activities (which were great) but the warmth and attentiveness of the staff made just as much of a good impression. Bird watching with Tony was super. Whale and dolphin watching with Sierra was fascinating. Snorkeling at Caño Island with Gabby delightful. While at Osa, Nancy, Mini, Cristina, Rudy, and Andres made us feel so at home and spoiled. I think I might prefer going in the off-season as we did to enjoy a more casual and family-like atmosphere.
We also did enjoy getting to know other guests from all over the world at dinner. And the food was amazing. Honestly it was some of the best fish I’ve tasted.

Be prepared to hike. Costa Rica is full of beautiful hills, and Aguila is no exception. It’s 100 feet up from the lobby to the rooms. Go see San Josecito beach at low tide. The coral reef there is great, but invisible at high tide.
