My friend and I really enjoyed our short stay at the Aaculaax in San Marcos. When we read how unique it was in design and artistic expression we were curious and when we got there were delighted with our room and our bathroom. The windows and murals and lights were so different. It was a cultural experience just waking up to look at the walls and through the stained glass windows. The bathroom was huge and airy and you could gaze out a little cut-out window as you showered. The flowers and plants all around surrounded us in beauty and eating out on the terrace amidst all the lushness was a wonderful treat. The breakfast was even artfully arranged and inviting. We really had fun there. The staff are so sweet and nice to talk to and very helpful. Even when, with the cleaning staff, we couldn't speak the language I felt there was good friendly communication going on.

My wife and I were recommended this hotel by some fellow travelers we met on the flight down from Tikal. Could not have been happier with the room. Staff was bilingual, rooms were clean and unusual. Would have like to have been able to stay in one of the tower rooms (they were outrageous), but the room we had was one of the best we stayed in on our two week trip. Breakfast is included in the morning.

The only disappointment was the lack of a view of Lake Atitlan; that was only available from the tower rooms. Worth the walk from the dock. San Marcos is an unusual town, but one of the more laid back Mayan villages on the lake.

Room Tip: If you can afford a $100 stay in the tower. Need to be able to walk up some steep stairs.

My partner and I spent 3 nights at Aaculax and it's certainly a beautiful location and the hotel itself is pretty extraordinary. San Marcos is a very alternative town, so if this is your scene, you'll love it, but if you're looking for more of an evening culture with bars etc... you are better off basing yourself in San Pedro.

There is a lot to like about Aaculax...
- The location offers stunning views of the lake
- the rooms are all unique and really beautiful
- Lucy the owner is just lovely and really helpful. She has loads of suggestions of things to see and do.
- Breakfast is included and it's nice
- you can get an amazing massage for a really good price

There are a few things however that we didn't love quite as much...
- We stayed in the Cascada room, and whilst it looks beautiful, it wasn't completely comfortable. It gets full sun in the morning, and the thin curtains don't block it out, so only stay here if you like waking up early. There's no fan, and you can't keep the windows open because of bugs, so it gets a bit stuffy at night. We were bitten quite a bit by Mosquitos on our second night, and were promised a net, but this never materialized. Suffice to say, I probably wouldn't pick this room if I was staying there again, but everyone has their own comfort levels, so make up your own mind.
- Apart from Lily, who was amazing, the young staff, whilst very nice, seem quite inexperienced and kind of hapless. Breakfast is served buffet style, and it includes fruit, granola, bread for toasting and boiled eggs. On our last day, they were half an hour late serving everything, which would normally have been ok, but we needed to catch a bus so it was a bit of a pain. Weirdly, they didn't start making the coffee til last, even though that's the thing that takes longest, so there just seems to be an absence of common sense.

All things considered, I probably wouldn't stay there again, but that's probably more to do with the town than the hotel. Read the other reviews, many of which love everything about it, and make up your own mind.

Friends and I stayed here last weekend (2/12/12) and thought the views were just heavenly from our room. While I also felt the rooms were a bit overpriced for the island, and we did not get a room for three as anticipated, the ambiance and location made up for the cramped sleeping conditions. Anyway we were only there for the weekend. Breakfast was adequate and the gardens were just beautiful. A deposit is required for the room key, no credit cards accepted, and it is a bit tricky to get hot water. There were ample restaurants and nightlife in this small town for a weekend at least, and everything is within walking distance. Be sure to carry a flash light as it is very dark at night returning to the hotel. Unless you aretill, the views are worth it.

Room Tip: The higher up, the better view.
