Restaurante Refectorio
Ranked #19 of 144 Restaurants in Antequera
Certificate of Excellence
Description: Restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide 2015. Refectorio Restaurant is the best kept secret of Hotel Convento La Magdalena. Situated in what was originally the convent's refectory, it is a treat for the senses, not simply due to its scents and flavours, but also due to the stunning views of the Andalusian countryside you can enjoy from your table. The restaurant's cuisine is based on traditional Andalusian and Mediterranean gastronomy with creative twists. It is a restaurant with a distinctive personality that deserves to be enjoyed in peace. Our renowned eatery serves ecological products produced in the hotel's own vegetable patches and its own farm. The cooking team is led by David Muñoz, who is the head chef of the Antequera Golf Group. He previously worked at the famous El Bulli Restaurant, run by Ferrán Adriá. He is a model professional leading our cuisine and guaranteeing its quality. The restaurant offers a tasting menu that has been recommended by the Michelin Guide and a select menu that varies according to the products in season. This is all complemented with the full selection of wines from our winery. There is something to suit all palates. You should also check out our Piano Bar and terraces. They provide relaxed and inviting settings where you can enjoy simple cuisine, including a selection of Iberian ham products, salads and tapas based on traditional Andalusian foods.

This restaurant is a must visit, they offer amazing cuisine which is reasonably priced and the staff are so welcoming and friendly! Not only is the restaurant superb but you get to enjoy having dinner in the exquisite Hotel Convento La Magdalena seriously it is out of this world. Walking around this hotel takes your breath away as it is steeped in history and it is located in the most beautiful surroundings. After dinner just walk out and look up at the stars at night, stunning! We highly recommend it and cannot wait to return.

Although spending the night in the flashy new-style Parador in Antequera town, we decided to follow the TripAdvisor 5 star rating of the Refectorio, the restaurant of the '5-star' Convento de la Magdalena hotel. Given these ratings, expectations were high but so was the deception. Located in the middle-of-nowhere (don't go there unless you have your own car, because taxis are a rare item in Antequera, probably even more so if trying to go back to town after dinner), the whole setting looks nice enough from a distance, but a certain decay is setting in and proper maintenance seems to be somewhat overdue. As if to prove this point, upon entry, some staff were trying to cope with a major flooding due to a burst water pipe. The restaurant staff were most likely not the brightest from any hotel school and at times seemed surpassed by the need to cope with a dining group of about 20 golfers. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was by no means '5-stars' : menu cards glued clumsily together, stains on some napkins, dirty windows etc. - it all seemed to have had better days once upon a time. Our starter was OK, but the main courses didn't live up to expectations: the duck on one side, seemed to have a lot of mileage under its wings, the charcoal-grilled pork on the other also required a lot of 'dental efforts'...
When a trolley passed by with about 8-10 plates of fish as main course for some of the golfers, we could smell it when passing by, probably not the freshest catch of the day...Finally, we got lucky to get served relatively on time because the patience of the two ladies at the adjacent table was put very much to test, having to wait for well over 45 minutes to see their first food arriving. Fortunately we did remember how to find our way back into town, meandering through the dark/ unlit country side. By no means "vaut le détour"!
