Made a reservation by telephone for a group of 4 rooms to celebrate a 40th birthday. Reservation was handled efficiently and I received a confirmation the same day. Arrived on a bright sunny day (not many of those these days) to a welcoming and friendly hotel. Had six kids between us and were directed to the Dower House Apartments which turned out to be fab for space and preparing light snacks for the kids throughout the day. Saturday evening dinner was booked in a private room for eight of us (think it was called the Chinese room) which was wonderful. The food was excellent and exciting with a varied choice on the menu. Chef even produced a birthday cake for our friends 40th!
Kids had a fantastic time, the indoor pool was a winner along with the Four Bears Den the creche where the little ones were felt most welcome. Would definitely go back and recomend to all friends, especially those with families.

We have just come back from a 4-night break staying in the Dower House Apartments at the Ickworth Hotel. My wife and I chose this hotel because it is pet-friendly and we wanted to take our dog with us.
The hotel setting is stunning, set as it is in 1800 acres of National Trust grounds. The Dower House Apartments are in a separate building half a mile from the main hotel and in their own 5-acre enclosed gardens. If you are wanting a classic hotel experience, then I'd suggest you choose to stay in the main hotel, since the apartments are not serviced every day (unless you choose to pay extra). However, if you want to get away from it all and are happy to self-cater, eat out, make your own bed etc, then the apartments are ideal. They offer greater flexibility for families as there is a free-of-charge laundry, DVD library, games (board games to table tennis to PS2), bikes and even wellies and push chairs. The linen cupboard is left open so you can help yourself to fresh towels, toiletries etc whenever you need.
BUT, if you are planning to self-cater, don't book into rooms Scarlet or Abele because they don't have the same facilities as the others to enable full self-catering. All of the other apartments have dishwashers, fridges and convection/microwave ovens and a sink/work-surface area. Ludwig's has a full, separate kitchen, the apartment is gorgeous and absolutely huge and even though it is only a 1-bedroom apartment, it runs virtually the whole way down the side of the building. A door interconnects with Scarlet. There is a facility to order food from the main hotel, but this is slow and quite pricey.
We stayed in Ludwig's and had a very restful time, with views over the gardens and more space then we knew what to do with.
Ernie, the Dower House Head of Housekeeping, was very helpful and accommodating. Martin, the Deputy Manager (we think) up at the main hotel was extremely understanding and considerate of our unique circumstances during our stay. In addition Jane and Sam on the hotel reception helped us with our needs such that our stay was made as pleasant as possible.
