We went for dinner and drinks last Saturday evening. Initially we were offered a table until 20:30 as it had been reserved. Not wanting to be rushed and knowing that we were staying for drinks after the meal, we asked to have a table that was not reserved, which we duly got. As a result we were really disappointed to have been forced to move shortly after finishing our meal to a much smaller and less comfortable table to accomodate other diners. Obviously we left feeling that we were completely under valued as customers despite the frankly astronomical cost of their beer. Total bill of £120 for three burgers and a few beers.

One of the wettest days of the year and dining at Nether Abbey was a delight. Recommended by Mel at our B & B, no.10, we had an excellent meal. Sea bream fillet and fishermans pie, accompanied with an excellent white Rioja. Desert was beautifully presented and decent coffe rounded off a great meal..

As I did last year, I followed up my visit to the Nether Abbey to the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire a few days later. I noted that The Nether Abbey Hotel currently holds the East Lothian 'Best Hotel Food Award for 2015'. Not something Gleneagles would / could hold in my eyes! The food at the Nether Abbey was superb. Piping hot, freshly cooked, and extremely tasty. The breakfast too was freshly cooked to order yet at Gleneagles the scrambled eggs from the morning buffet were 'watery'. We stayed in Room 1 (again) which is palatial, a sumptuous stand alone bath with piping hot mains water. The king size bed was extremely comfy and the views over the River Forth over to Fife were a breath of fresh air. Coupled with friendly, genuine staff, a busy bar / restaurant we will definitely be back , hopefully sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the River Forth.

Staff, food and bar facilities are first class. We come every autumn for a golf trip and are never disappointed. The hotel thoroughly deserves the recent award and we're looking forward to next year already.
