Oh dear. Unfortunately all the earlier reviews were true. Unironed bedding, wood chip walls, dated, unhappy building . Nothing has moved on. Wood panelling, dead spiders on the bath, in the " restaurant " the tables were sticky, chairs were broken and the high top chairs were torn and dirty. Such a beautiful spot, so much could work so well.

Stayed here for the weekend whilst attending an event at the ICBP (falconry centre). Right in the centre of Newent, the hotel is an old coach house. The reception isn't manned all the time, but a friendly member of staff, soon showed us to our room. The bedroom and bathroom were quite spacious and clean, although décor was a little tired. The bed was comfortable, there was complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits plus shampoo, shower gel etc. The room overlooked the main road so was noisy late at night and early the following morning. Wi-Fi connection was a bit hit and miss and parking was very tight, through the archway, to the car park. Bit of a mix-up with times for breakfast, but enjoyed full English breakfast, plus cereals and fruit juice.

Room was large and adequate. Enough sachets of drinks left which was great. Hosts friendly. No evening meal as booked as they don't cook on a Monday! Hosts very friendly. Pub needed updating.
Bed comfortable but couldn't sleep because of noise!

Didn't realise there was a sorting office next door so woken up at 5.30 am!

We made a stop at the George Hotel for dinner.
The menu may have been small but the food was excellent. My husband and I had scampi to start with, which was the best we had ever had. Our main was chicken breast in garlic, mashed potato, carrots and runner beans with a light gravy/sauce. The meal was huge, well presented and at £8.25 for the main dish it was excellent value.
The chef came out personally to bring us our food, who has not been there long but is doing a great job with the food.

I don't understand how the owners of such an old hotel could ruin it by wallpapering in wood chip, ceilings also!!
Clearly their is a lot of work to be done to this hotel; which is hidden under the wood chip!
Apart from this: The beds are very comfortable , Carpets clean.
Tap dripped all night, TV close to the bed so cant see it clearly whilst lying in bed. Hotel on the main road so traffic is very noisy.
Didn't get to example the breakfast as we went downstair 25 minutes too early and the hotel was empty; apart from 2 cleaners who only spoke limited English.
