Wanting a light lunch we had to wait until our request for a table could be confirmed although at that early hour the restaurant was not busy. We were offered a table in the bar which was rapidly prepared for us. The service was speedy, efficient but impersonal.
We were offered the full luncheon menu but chose simple dishes from the chalk board and were asked the irritating question "is that all?" The wait for two simple dishes was long and when they arrived they were disappointing. We had selected mackerel pate and toast - and that is just what arrived, no garnish of any sort except a small sprig of fennel. The pate was a coarse mix of smoked mackerel and mayonnaise, not appealing and very unlike a nearby pub's version which was always beautifully creamy in its preparation and attractively presented.
We have known the Beckford for many years, have found it very varied in the quality of its service but have always been prepared to give it a 'second chance'. We think this was the last, and are sorry but with indifferent service and disappointing food we can be happier elsewhere locally.
