We'd visited the Roscoff Exotic Gardens which weren't a patch on these ones. There were so many different 'rooms' to explore, and the wildflower meadow looking out over the sea was breathtaking

The island is the real highlight- don't miss iIe de Batz if you are in Brittany. The garden is nice with pants from all over the world which flourish because of the warm and sunny weather on the island. Very sheltered at the eastern end of the island with large trees the garden was first established in the late 19th century. Interesting history as well.

You can get to Roscoff from St. Malo in time to get the 11:30 ferry to Ile-de-Batz (even if you have trouble with the parking, as we did). Once on the island you will feel as if you are in southern France, or Italy, or Greece - very Mediterranean plants and scenery. The 20 minute walk to the gardens is super pleasant. Just outside the gardens there's a little outdoor restaurant serving basic delicious items like Croque Monsieur, salads, and ice cream (and, um, beer!). We had a light lunch and set off for the gardens. To us it seemed like Valentia Island, near Waterville in Ireland, another subtropical garden. This one isn't as big, or quite as well maintained, but it definitely makes for a wonderful day. You start asking yourself - how about a vacation just here? Don't miss it!
