“Worth a visit”

South African Naval Museum

This museum is well worth a visit; for anyone, not just those interested in Naval History. The exhibits are presented in neat, well-curated, bite-sized chunks. It is easy to walk through, never boring and jam packed with information. Maybe not an ideal outing for small children, although there are many interesting displays that may fascinate them. The wealth of information and exhibition pieces are almost overwhelming! The old-world charm of the venue with its clock tower and chapel creates a calm and proud atmosphere. I was especially impressed by the grandious paintings of the various admirals. Congratulations to the people behind the scenes! Whenever in Simon’s Town, go visit this museum.

This museum is well set out, very well curated and the chapel amazing. If you are interested in submarines, ships, their weapons and equipment, this is the place to go and see the people who serve and served. The entrance is free, but on your way out you can leave a donation.

My boyfriend is somewhat of a weapons enthusiast so any excuse to get up close and personal with a big gun wether it works or not. Needless to say an overnight visit to Simonstown had to include a visit to the naval museum. It's been revamped a little since I was last there and also has the new transformation section which was informative. For a museum that is free this one is great. I would encourage a donation as there aren't many like this one in South Africa. The South African Navy and the simonstown historical society can be very proud of this little gem. Definitely worth the visit.
