Idwala Boutique Hotel Johannesburg
Ranked #3 of 8 Hotels in Randburg
Reviewed 17 June 2015

We stayed here because our friends knew the owners (and had stayed here before) and suggested we stay when in Johannesburg. So we did - with our friends - with whom we were travelling for 3 weeks in South Africa. We loved this boutique hotel.
Jeanette, her husband and staff were wonderful.
It is in the suburbs - but that wasn't a problem as we were able to get to the area from the airport by train - and then by car to the hotel. On our first night a drive was arranged for us from the airport to the hotel. If one arrives later in the evening this is the best option. It is situated in a secure area in a mainly residential area but close to shopping centers and restaurants.
The building and gardens have been beautifully maintained. There is a secure fence and gate around the buildings and a guard is always on duty for the safety of all the guests. Though a smaller hotel it is adequately set up for meetings. There was a small conference on while we were there. There is a main building with several private accommodations in the grounds. We were in the main building where there is a dining room, bar and sitting area in the entrance area. The main building is a renovated version of a very old farm house - with its circular style and thatched ceilings.
We loved our room! We were amazed at its spaciousness. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was spa like with lush toiletries.
The breakfast presentation was lovely - with ample food available in smorgasbord style. On top of that, we were able to order a hot breakfast - anything we liked!
The staff of course will also arrange tours. We had a tour of Soweto arranged with a private driver - only about a 30 minute drive away. We also stayed in the hotel the night before we headed off for our safari adventure.
Guests should be aware that Johannesburg has a power problem It is not a hotel problem! I noticed that a guest was upset with the hotel management for a communication lapse. The electricity can go off anytime - therefore communication via telephone and wifi is disrupted.
I would highly recommend staying in this lovely hotel with their talented and friendly staff. I hope I have the opportunity to return and see more of this beautiful country with Idwala as a must stay!

Room Tip: We stayed in the main building - room 1. The outer buildings also looked lovely.

We were so pleasantly surprised with our stay at Idwala. The staff is so friendly and the place has a wonderful cosy atmosphere. There is a lot of attention to detail, like fruit bowls in the rooms... We had a fabulous breakfast. We would definitely come again!

Staying at Idwala is always such a pleasure. I have been fortunate enough not only to accompany my husband for business on several occasions but we have also had the chance to make this our base while visiting friends and family in Johannesburg.

It’s very easy to slip into a relaxed mode almost as soon as you arrive. The friendly and welcoming staff and the lovely surroundings seem to take over from the stresses of travel and hectic schedules.

I love the chance to have a leisurely and generous breakfast and I make the most of well prepared and tasty hot breakfast. My husband enjoys the lighter spread of fruit, cereals, cold cuts and cheeses before dashing off to work.

So whether I am sitting comfortably at my computer in my room, or relaxing in the beautifully decorated ethnic-looking lounge, or enjoying a dinner in cosy comfort by the fire in winter it's all good. What I particularly enjoy is a cup of coffee with biscuits in the garden listening to the birds.

I leave with a sigh and a twinge of nostalgia. But at least I know I will be back again sometime!

We enjoyed our stay there very much and it was hard to say good bye after only 1 night there.

The 5 star guest house is located in a nice and quiet area of randburg, that obviously is one of the better areas of joburg.

Breakfast buffet was complete, fresh and the coffe was excellent. If you need a restaurant reservation just ask jeanette, she will be happy to either serve you a dinner in the dining room or recommend you an excellent restaurant.

We'll definetely come back and can totally recommend this place.

Chef Paul and Jeanette run a secret world in the heart of Randburg free from stress and deadlines.

The breakfast included in the rate was amazing and I have never had such delicious mushrooms in my life. The rooms are luxurious and spacious and the bed amazing.

After the spa treatment in our rooms we had completely forgotten that Monday was less than 12 hours away and that the real world was calling again.

5-stars!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden room, but any room even the house rooms are perfect.
