We stayed here because our friends knew the owners (and had stayed here before) and suggested we stay when in Johannesburg. So we did - with our friends - with whom we were travelling for 3 weeks in South Africa. We loved this boutique hotel.
Jeanette, her husband and staff were wonderful.
It is in the suburbs - but that wasn't a problem as we were able to get to the area from the airport by train - and then by car to the hotel. On our first night a drive was arranged for us from the airport to the hotel. If one arrives later in the evening this is the best option. It is situated in a secure area in a mainly residential area but close to shopping centers and restaurants.
The building and gardens have been beautifully maintained. There is a secure fence and gate around the buildings and a guard is always on duty for the safety of all the guests. Though a smaller hotel it is adequately set up for meetings. There was a small conference on while we were there. There is a main building with several private accommodations in the grounds. We were in the main building where there is a dining room, bar and sitting area in the entrance area. The main building is a renovated version of a very old farm house - with its circular style and thatched ceilings.
We loved our room! We were amazed at its spaciousness. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was spa like with lush toiletries.
The breakfast presentation was lovely - with ample food available in smorgasbord style. On top of that, we were able to order a hot breakfast - anything we liked!
The staff of course will also arrange tours. We had a tour of Soweto arranged with a private driver - only about a 30 minute drive away. We also stayed in the hotel the night before we headed off for our safari adventure.
Guests should be aware that Johannesburg has a power problem It is not a hotel problem! I noticed that a guest was upset with the hotel management for a communication lapse. The electricity can go off anytime - therefore communication via telephone and wifi is disrupted.
I would highly recommend staying in this lovely hotel with their talented and friendly staff. I hope I have the opportunity to return and see more of this beautiful country with Idwala as a must stay!
