Hemingway House B&B Apartments
Reviewed 22 April 2016

Currently stationed at Vincenza with the 173rd ABN Brigade. We went to the Hemingway House for the weekend (1st weekend in April). We had a wonderful time and enjoyed talking with Marie, the owner of this really amazing B&B. She is from Canada, but has lived all over the world, so speaking English and relating to our mutual travel experiences was really great.

My wife and I loved the small village in the Slovenian Alps..and so close to the base.

We met another couple from Aviano Air Base (Air Force). It was a good time and recommend highly. We will be going back.

thanks much Marie for the really wonderful weekend.

Room Tip: The room with the view of the mountains.

We stayed for one night and really liked it. The room was clean and big, the bed was ver comfortable. The windows opened to the street which made the night a bit noisy, but the price and the nice host Marie were great. The B&B is only a few metres away from the main square, so there are some restaurants and cafes nearby. parking is free on a parking space across the street.

I stayed in Padley's Room for two weeks in June, and it was a perfect base to relax and explore the area. The room is comfortable and very spacious, and has a decent kitchen stocked with quality cooking equipment. The shower is great too. Marie is a wonderful host, offering advice on the area and keeping all supplies stocked up.

The area has a lot of activities available to the "active tourist", with several rafting companies and bike hire places just around the corner. There are many good walks and hikes - and it's just 15 minutes by car to the Italian border if you fancy a change of scene and some gelato. The town itself has a small supermarket and a couple of bakeries, as well as a large number of restaurants if you don't fancy cooking.

All in all an excellent stay - highly recommended.

We spent 6 nights in 'Martha's studio' and really enjoyed the very well equipped self catering accomodation & the lovely scenery whilst sitting out on the upstairs communal terrace. The terrace was mainly looking out to the back garden and old barn (which I imagine Hemingway house itself once looked like before Marie cleverly restored it) but you still had a great view of the mountains and the low clouds wrapping themselves around them, which was pretty magical.

As it is a shared outdoor space, you won't be guaranteed to have privacy & the outside table is directly outside the window so other guests could potentially see in. However, luckily as we are late risers, we had our breakfast & planned our days out there every morning without having to share the table/chairs with anyone. In the evening sharing the terrace with other guests who were out for a smoke was not a problem as I also smoke.

One morning Marie brought us up some breakfast which her other guests didn't end up eating. That was a really nice touch.

When we asked for ideas, Marie gave us suggestions for the best WW1 trenches to visit and mountain views over the Soca Valley, places to go swimming over the border in Italy, reccomended cake shops, places to buy walking shoes etc. She also kindly replaced the two single beds in our room with a double bed on the second day. What a fantastic sleep we had every single night. It was so peaceful (almost too quiet at times, even!) and so comfortable that we often struggled to get up!

Nice little kitchenette with everything you need to cook your meals - good knives, pots & pans and a good selection of utensils. I personally would have liked a little freezer within the fridge but no big deal. It really felt like coming 'home' after a long day of hiking/water sports/long breathtaking drives. Modern & very clean bathroom with powerful hot shower. Soundproofing in there could do with some work as you could hear everything when sitting out on the terrace even with the door and window shut.

Quiet town lacking in any real atmosphere because we visited in mid Septmber; out of season. However it was just a base for us so that didn't really matter, we preferred the feeling of having the Soca Valley to ourselves anyway! There's ample parking across the road by the basketball court, local pizzeria, handy little bakery and a Mercator Supermarket around the corner for everything else.

Hemingway house is situated within easy reach of some incredible walks (I highly recommend the long and scenic walk across the river over suspension and log bridges - to Slap Kozjak, a stuning waterfall within a cave), swimming spots (Nadiza River, 5 mins drive towards Italy), two extreme sports offices (opposite the house) and of course some incredible outdoor war museum walks and trails (Kolovrat being our favourite, incredibe trenches to explore, a very moving experience).

All in all we would definitely recommend Hemingway House for anyone looking for this type of holiday. We were inspired by what Marie has done with the place and we would definitely return.

Room Tip: I'd say Martha's room would be the first choice if you like a bit of outdoor space. The fron...

Our apartment was beautifully clean with a very well thought-out design...and wonderfully comfy bed with snug duvet. Everything you want in a Self-Catering Unit and more! Excellent lighting in the bathroom, hot blasting shower, sharp knives in the kitchen with proper coffee and craftier, great toaster and FREE WiFi. Marie could not have been more helpful and attentive. THE best Pizza across the road to one side and the other side, a wonderful bar with fab HOT coffee and great beer. Everything is walking distance and a very handy car park opposite too. Cannot recommend Hemmingway House more! We will definitely be back soon. Thank you so much Marie.
