“a great family stay in a beautiful village”
Reviewed 21 July 2020 for a stay in July 2020

I am just back from my stay here with my family of young boys. The house was perfect for us - roomy, and such a novelty being next to railway line where the train would pass very close to our window (never notice it more than twice a day). There is not much of a garden but what is there is very nice and well, you do not need a garden as there is so much open space around you. Within 10 mins walk you would be in the village, with beach, pontoon and playpark, there is woods and more private beaches that can be found upon exploring. My children are aged between 8 -13 years old so we would send them out to explore from time to time as there is so little cars about (and when they do come in they have to drive slowly) so I totally felt it was a safe environment for them. There is a very nice take away van (out of sight) but literally 3 mins around the corner - my husband decided to get a fried egg roll one morning for his breakfast and sent one of his sons out to get this! You can get other things (burgers etc) and at same place you can buy eggs, jam, relishes, homegrown vegetables. We ate at 2 pubs in the village and I particularly loved having food and drink at the one facing the shores - it was just heaven to hang out there. A new cafe/gin place (think it is called no 12) has opened up and its lovely too.

We swam off the pontoon in the village - no wetsuits on. Its cold but refreshing. There is another private beach on other side (we didn't swim there but could have but boys love jumping off a pontoon). We did the walk up to duncraig castle which was great and there are more which we did not get round to as we visited Skye a few times too (we decided to take advantage of the fact that skye was much quieter due to covid 19). We also visited Balmacara and did a lovely loch side walk and visited the coffee shop in Balmacara Square which is wonderful). In Skye we swam in the fairy pools, walked up Old Man of Storr, visited portree and Broadfoot. Also recommend a visit to the Skye Candle shop. Eileen Dornan castle is not far from cottage and although closed due to covid, you can still walk about (I think they told me they hope to open by August 20202). A lot of places were still shut but there was one lovely shop Strom in Kyle of Lochalsh who said they would open up the shop for me (I message them via facebook to ask when they were opening as I had seen some lovely stuff I wanted to buy). So I had the shop opened up for me at an agreed time for a wander, all to myself (almost felt like royalty here). In Kyle of Lochalsh there is a seafood van (round from the bus station) that sells award winning cullen skink (it was sold out so never got to taste it) but I did get some amazing crab salad and smoked salmon salad and ice creams for the boys.

so its a great base to stay, a lovely cottage to stay in and a wonderful welcome tray of goodies from the owners (the most generous I have come across so far) and I have come away from a lovely relaxing holiday. Many thanks

“Warm and cosy in beautiful Plockton ”

The property owners were very helpful and pleasant to deal with on each occasion. We were welcomed by a lovely gift of bread, coffee, oatcakes, cookies, milk, butter, and wine, and this was really appreciated after a long drive. And homemade jam!

What looks like a tiny cottage from the outside, along the train line, is very cosy, spacious, warm and clean inside, with a nice big kitchen, and plenty of storage in each bedroom. There was nothing more we would have needed, the owners even delivered an extra bag of coal for the fire on the lounge!

There were plenty of leaflets and information about the Highlands, good books on the bookshelves and the internet was (at a delight of the 8-year old) super fast.

We really enjoyed watching a two-carriage train passing by the window (some 3-4 times), slowing down to sop at the station which is located a few houses down the road, and counting the passengers. Sadly we did not have time to go on the train (to Inverness) ... maybe another time.

Plockton is a 10 minute walk down the hill, there are nice walks in the area, so you can walk and enjoy amazing scenery without having to drive, and plenty more if you are happy to drive out. The Coral Beach is 20 minutes walk away. We made day trips to Shieldaig and Torridon, and Skye too.

We also tried local inn and the hotel, food in both (especially sea food) really nice. Lovely holiday.

“Cosy cottage”
Reviewed 29 October 2019 for a stay in October 2019

What a lovely welcome we had to The Sidings with a lovely welcome basket. The hosts Thomas and Julie could not have been more helpful or friendly. The house itself was so nice to return to after a cold day out, and offered everything you can think of for the perfect stay. Our 2 dogs were made just as welcome as we were. Thank you.

“Great location, really comfortable, pet friendly and a lovely welcome pack.”
Reviewed 20 August 2019 for a stay in August 2019

Very comfortable and well equipped house in the gorgeous village of Plockton. Thomas and Julie left a great welcome pack including their excellent homemade jam. 10 min walk to the sea front where there are several good places to eat and there are lots of good walks from the house too. Our dog loved it. It's a great location to explore the wider area with easy access to Skye, the Applecross peninsular and much more. We will visit again.

“Lovely home for our time in Plockton”
Reviewed 15 August 2019 for a stay in July 2019

Our 3rd trip to Plockton, but first time with our little girl, so decided to rent somewhere for the week rather than one of the hotels. The Sidings was a great home from home. Well equipped, clean and comfortable, and the welcome pack was a really nice touch. The house is in a handy location, and we enjoyed walking down to the village and exploring. It was so quiet at night, even with the windows open (we had some really good weather, hit 30C one day!). Our daughter loved seeing the trains go past the window. We were all sad to leave after a great week, but we will be back!
