The Great
Lovely rooms, extremely romantic, nightly S'more's were a cute addition.
The staff were great and pleasant and went out of their way to be helpful. The massage and pool areas were lovely. The rooms were cute and private, and the heated bathroom floors were A+ They also have INCREDIBLE bath products which (I think?) are made with ingredients they grow on the ranch. Those
were a highlight for sure.
What Could Have Been Better
The Chromecast in the room seemed to disconnect multiple times and seemingly at random--but that was the only hiccup in the room.
The food, however, was quite bad and overpriced. You'd figure a coastal ranch would have better, more local options (or that the food they did have would be thoughtful and well-prepared.) We mainly ate there out of convenience. The pasta didn't taste fresh, their vegetables varied between under-cooked and overcooked, over-salted and completely bland--I got a salad that still had dirt in the lettuce leaves. I rarely order non-vegetable based dishes but ordered fish a few times just to have something with flavor (the salmon was cooked well, but it would have been nice to have local seafood instead of Atlantic Salmon and Alaskan Halibut when we're right next to the ocean.)
The main reason we chose Carmel Valley Ranch was because we wanted a place we didn't have to leave: an extremely lazy and luxurious anniversary weekend. But the food was bad enough that I'd recommend you look elsewhere if that is also your goal. (The cocktails--even basic ones like a martini-- were also not very good.)
We still had a great time and if you're not super picky about food and don't mind overpaying for it, I'm sure you'll still have a great time too!
